PS5 devkit provokes divisive nostalgia trip as it turns up alongside Xbox Project Scorpio machine in video clip
Update: The video now seems to have been removed from TikTok but can still be found on image-hosting sites and Twitter.
Original story:
It seems safe to say that Sony surprised just about everyone when the PlayStation 5’s retail design was finally unveiled. There had been plenty of leaked images of the PS5 devkit beforehand that had helped concept creators come up with their own designs for the end product, with some of them receiving broad approval among gamers. The PS5 is a unique-looking console, but Sony’s plan in regard to design should have been guessed at earlier just by looking at the devkit.
Normally, console devkits are pretty much non-descript boxes that look very little like the final product. Just like the PS5 devkit looked nothing like the retail PS5 it also didn’t resemble any other devkit that had gone before it. Such was its radical design that many fans were hoping Sony would produce the PS5 in that image. There are no secrets about the PS5 devkit revealed in this TikTok video, which is embedded in a Twitter post below, and it is happily nestled next to what appears to be an Xbox One X/S devkit.
There is a seemingly barbed comment in the video clip about the PS5 devkit being a “space heater”, although this could be aimed at either the design or its heat emissions…or both. As we now know, the PS5 has a thorough cooling system that looks nothing like the multiple fins sported by the PS5 devkit. Comments about the video have included those bemoaning the fact that Sony didn’t choose this V-shaped design for the final PS5 while others have dismissed it as “ugly” and “forgettable”. The PS5 devkit's design remains as divisive and different as ever.
