Deal | Only $1.50: Hyped but macabre strategy game hits a new low price on Steam

While most strategy games revolve around building something, Plague Inc. is all about total annihilation. The game was released on Steam back in February 2016 and saw an unexpected surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the Summer Sale, Plague Inc: Evolved – the expanded PC and console version of the mobile hit – has now dropped to a new all-time low, according to SteamDB. Until July 9, the Steam Deck-verified title is available with a 90% discount for $1.49 instead of $14.99.
The gameplay is as simple as it is macabre: players develop a pathogen and try to infect the entire world population before a cure is completed. To do so, they collect DNA points, which can be used to further evolve the disease. At first, the focus is mainly on improving transmission – for example through air, water, animals or blood. Later, symptoms such as coughing, fever or organ failure can be unlocked. However, anyone who makes their pathogen too deadly too early risks countries closing their borders or research into a cure progressing more quickly.

Plague Inc. remains very popular with players to this day. Steam lists more than 64,000 reviews, 94% of which are positive. On Metacritic, the picture is slightly weaker, with a Metascore of 80 and a User Score of 7.1. This is mainly because the game partly depends on chance and a large part of the gameplay consists of observing and waiting. Still, anyone who enjoys strategy games and has not played it yet can hardly go wrong at a price below $1.50.
