OnePlus presumably abandons plans to ditch OxygenOS as it announces OxygenOS 13
Last year, we reported that OnePlus had decided to ditch its OxygenOS in favor of its sister brand Oppo’s ColorOS. This wasn’t supposed to be a simple switching of Android forks but an effort to combine the ColorOS with the unique features of the OxygenOS to form a sort of “unified OS”. OnePlus’s plan was to outfit phones launching in 2022 with the new operating system.
OnePlus has now announced that OxygenOS 13 is coming. In a post on the company’s forums, OnePlus is inviting users to attend an online “Open Ears Forum” event. The event is scheduled to run between 7:30 - 9:30 am EST on February 28, 2022, and 15 users will be able to attend. Reportedly, the smartphone maker is using the event as an opportunity to work with fans to “co-create a perfect OxygenOS for OnePlus”.
If you want to attend the event, fill out this form and OnePlus will let you know if you were selected to attend.
The announcement for a new version of OxygenOS may be an indication that OnePlus has decided against its plans to do away with its proprietary Android skin. OnePlus's plan was to deliver Android 13 with the new OS. But now it looks like the Android 13 update will be delivered via OxygenOS 13, presumably putting the ColorOS merger on the back-burner.
