The Oneplus 5 Smartphone Gets A +1 From Me
Source: Tech Girl English Archive.org version
I liked this phone. The Dash Charging is awesome. It charges the battery quickly and is the best I’ve used with fast charging. I thought the overall performance was good and the phone really is a decent work horse. Getting hold of it is a different story though. If you want to purchase it cash you can buy it from the distributor direct for R11 970 else you can only get it on contract via FNB connect. That’s annoying, I wish more providers would make it available.

OnePlus 5 battery life review
Source: Android Authority English Archive.org version
In actual real world usage, the OnePlus 5 has proven to be a very stellar companion, lasting through every day and on most days, lasting until the end of the next day. This is with an average of 4.5 to 6 hours’ screen on time and although phone calls in particular do drain the battery somewhat, the OnePlus 5 battery certainly does a pretty good job at keeping the handset powered all day. It’s not quite the 2+ day battery life that we’ve all been yearning for, but the OnePlus 5 definitely comes close.

OnePlus 5 Review: Meeting Expectations
Source: Lowyat.net English Archive.org version
The OnePlus 5 is OnePlus’ most expensive smartphone yet. It’s still more affordable than other premium-tier phones in the market, of course, but for a company that built its reputation on offering flagship smartphones at an affordable price point, it has to prove that the OnePlus 5 is worth its higher asking price; higher price tag means meeting higher expectations.

On the other hand, if you opt for the 8GB/128GB version for AED 2099, that puts the OnePlus 5 in close range of the Samsung Galaxy S8 which might have a lesser amount of RAM and storage space but has a better design and features such as the Infinity Display, Always-On screen, Wireless Charging and a Dual Pixel camera which takes incredibly good pictures. This makes it difficult for me to recommend the OnePlus 5 to the general user- even though I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing it. However, if you’re more on an enthusiast or a fan of previous OnePlus phones, the OnePlus 5 will definitely please you.

OnePlus 5 review: The best flagship phone by OnePlus thus far

OnePlus 5 almost got everything right – the device comes across as a decent flagship offering in spite of its flaws. It’s sufficient on the hardware front, thanks to its current-gen flagship processor. OnePlus 5 review - A better Android alternative to the Apple iPhone 7 Plus
Source: Tech Nave English Archive.org version
Okay, there is the Xiaomi Mi 6 for RM1899, but we haven't really tested it so we can't say for sure about that. But one thing for sure is that this is called a "flagship killer" for a good reason, if you compare to the iPhone 7 Plus which is RM3699, the OnePlus 5 is obviously a better alternative since both have that similar telephoto lens. It's also much more affordable than the Samsung Galaxy S8 which goes for RM3299 (now RM2595, but still if you don't like the Infinity Display, the OnePlus 5 is definitely more preferable). Granted, the Huawei P10 is currently going for RM1939 from RM2499 but this is more of for those who prefer a dedicated monochrome sensor.

OnePlus 5 Review: The Well Balanced World Flagship
Source: Androidbeat English Archive.org version
OnePlus has become serious about the smartphone world with the ‘5’ – shipping in larger numbers, with bigger support resources thrown behind it, with OTA updates arriving almost daily (at the moment, at least), plus it’s hard not to be impressed by the sheer power and capacity on offer here. Part of getting serious also means ramping up the price a little, but the OnePlus 5 still offers better value for money than almost any other phone out there in terms of bang per buck.

There are a lot of reasons to buy the OnePlus 5. Performance-wise, it feels like the fastest phone around. It’s also thin and light, and has a headphone jack. And its retail price is cheaper than the Snapdragon 835 phones from Samsung and HTC by a fairly significant margin.

Source: Tech PP English Archive.org version
One of the most well-known stories of the Bible is that featuring David and Goliath. David is a shepherd while Goliath is a giant of a man, a mighty warrior. And yet, David slays him, armed with nothing but a slingshot. The moral of the story: an underdog who uses his resources cleverly can defeat a much more powerful enemy, who does not do so. Now, since 2014, OnePlus has been playing the role of the smaller but more agile and clever David, taking on the Goliaths of the smartphone world (read Apple, Samsung, HTC, et al., this). The script has almost always been the same: we are smaller, so we do not have the resources of the big guys, but hey, because we are smaller, we can move faster and innovate faster and can offer you something that is very good at a remarkably lower price.

The OnePlus 5 is arguably the best Android phone you can buy. There are better phones out there, but then this is way more affordable than a Google Pixel XL or a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus making it a far better proposition for the buyer. OnePlus has again shown that a flagship phone does not really need to be priced at the higher end. It has also shown that you don’t really need a big gimmicky feature to make a flagship appealing, just doing everything well will do. The OnePlus 5 is sure to extend the company’s domination in the mid-rung for at least a few more months.

To wrap up, the OnePlus 5 has barged into the over Rs 30,000 territory which is dominated by brands such as Apple and Samsung. Will it succeed only time will tell. However, we were quite disappointed with the design of the device, especially, for the company that believes to “never settle” and still it bit that piece of “Apple”, which most of the brands have tasted. If you are looking to buy this smartphone for dual camera setup Honor 8 and iPhone 7Plus can be considered.

The best way to sum up the OnePlus 5 is that it's got the balance spot on. At $539 for the 128GB model and $479 for the 64GB model, the OnePlus 5 is the company's most costly phone yet. But then, in many aspects, you're getting many of the same features you find in phones that cost $200 to $300 more. The OnePlus 5 has the latest Snapdragon 835 processor with plenty of RAM, sharp cameras with optical zoom, and excellent battery life. But there are some caveats. Screen resolution is fine, but not up to par with the competition, there's no waterproofing or expandable storage, and the modem is capped to Cat 12 speeds.

There are several solid improvements in the OnePlus 5 worth mentioning, but the most standout aspect of the phone is its value. Just like the models preceding it, the OnePlus 5 gives you a near-flagship experience for $150-250 less than the competition. It does so by walking the line between putting money into the aspects that matter, while keeping costs low in other areas without making the phone feel cheap or substantially lacking.

I do wonder how long this can work for OnePlus. Every phone is good now, even much cheaper models. Nobody needs the latest and greatest in Snapdragon power, or a million gigs of RAM—at least until AI and VR make specs matter again. OnePlus found success by diligently avoiding bloatware and pointless customization, but other companies do this now, too. Meanwhile, buyers have shown they’re willing to spend more to get the phone they want. That means you’ll continue getting better phones at better prices. And as the pace of competition continues to accelerate, OnePlus and everyone else will have to get better, faster.

Comment

Model: While the OnePlus has always been marketed as a flagship phone with a non-flagship price, things seemed to have changed with the OnePlus 5. Let’s see how does the new iteration stack up against its competitors, because at this point the OnePlus *insert number* nomenclature is beginning to feel stale and dated. Beginning with the run-down of its hardware the OnePlus 5 is sporting a Qualcomm 835 SoC with 6 and 8 gigabyte memory versions and 64 GB of storage however this time in regards to its storage it is not expandable through your regular SDXC card slot because it has none. This seems like a step backward especially considering the OnePlus 5 is an Android device although it is not to say other Android manufacturers do not impose such a restriction. In terms of its display the OnePlus 5 is equipped with a 5.5 inch 2560x1440 resolution AMOLED screen. In comparison with its competition such as the iPhone 7 the screen remains reasonably sharp and vibrant however in terms of brightness while bright slightly loses out to the iPhone 7 but nonetheless remains comfortably readable under bright viewing conditions. Chassis construction of the OnePlus5 is reasonably solid however while common in most flagships these days the OnePlus 5 lacks waterproofing which can be a deal breaker since it is a standard feature these days.

All this talk about its hardware and LCD panel means nothing if the elephant in the room isn’t addressed. Specifically, its camera’s which is similar to Apple’s dual camera system, in order to achieve an optical zoom OnePlus has to use 2 different camera’s with different optical lengths this allows for a hardware based zoom as opposed to a software based zoom most phone provide. Although all these benefits seem moot because unlike its predecessor the OnePlus 5 doesn’t have an optical image stabilizer considering that this phone is a flagship which means corner cutting isn’t supposed to be a thing. Despite that the OnePlus 5 does shoot well albeit slightly handicapped by its lack of stabilizing. Software-wise the OnePlus 5 is preloaded with Android 7.1.1 OxygenOS build which extends Google’s stock android functionality such as configurable gestures. One other major standout as a flagship phone is the OnePlus 5 is equipped with plenty of memory although some might find it overkill even for Android then again with its asking price it’s actually a bargain. As per portable devices these days battery life is important and safe to say the OnePlus 5 does live up to its flagship title by being able to provide a day’s worth of usage time on its 3300mAh battery. In conclusion, the OnePlus 5 delivers on certain aspects as to what most consumers have expected of OnePlus however the OnePlus 5 feels like a compromise on certain aspects previously featured in its predecessors.

Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

Qualcomm Adreno 540: Integrated graphics card in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC. Slighly optimized architecture compared to the Adreno 530 but with higher clock speed due to the new 10 nm process. In the beginning of 2017 one of the fastest graphics cards for Android based smartphones.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

SD 835: High-End SoC for smartphones that was introduced in early 2017 and manufactured in 10 nm LPE FinFET at Samsung. Integrates 4x Kryo 280 at 2.45 GHz (max) for performance and 4x Kryo 280 at 1.9 GHz (max) for efficiency. Furthermore offers an X16 LTE modem, ac-WiFi and a dual-channel 32-Bit 1866 MHz LPDDR4x memory controller. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

5.50":

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

OnePlus:

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Shenzhen OnePlus Science & Technology Co., Ltd. was founded in 2013. In 2014, it launched its first smartphone. It is a subsidiary of BBK Electronic Corporation, a giant Chinese electronics group that also includes Oppo, Vivo and Realme. OnePlus specializes in the development and production of smartphones and other electronic devices such as headphones and smartwatches.

86.69%: This is an above-average rating. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that about one fifth of all tested models receive a better rating.
