OPPO has already launched the latest series of its Reno smartphones, in vanilla and Pro flavors. However, it has often tacked on additional variants in the previous generations of this line. Now, new leaks suggest that it is gearing up to do so again in 2021, starting with one called the Z 5G.

OPPO has already introduced the latest variants of its premium mid-range Reno smartphone series as successors to the 5, 5 Pro and 5 Pro+. However, there are now rumors that these 2021 devices will soon be joined by a new Z variant. By the sounds of its specs, it may contain some compromises compared to the existing vanilla variant, and will thus turn out as a new and more affordable 5G option.

Rumors of this OPPO Reno6 Z 5G kicked off with a tweet from the leaker Abhishek Yadav purporting to outline its specs in full. Apparently, the phone will get the vanilla 6's 6.43-inch AMOLED display, albeit with a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

Then again, it may also launch with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, ColorOS based on Android 11 and a 4310mAh battery with a fairly decent 30W charging rate.

The appearance of a new device on Geekbench has since given rise to speculation that it is the Reno6 Z 5G as described. It has might be one of OPPO's 'international' model numbers (CPH2237https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/8741742), and certainly has a lot of the same specs as outlined by Yadav, and also suggests that the upcoming phone will have a MediaTek Dimensity 800U processor, whereas the 6 gets a newer Dimensity 900 platform.

Earlier Reno Z variants have been released as phones that focus on camera abilities; however, with a rumored 64MP (main)/8MP (ultra-wide)/2MP (macro) set-up, there is nothing special about the projected 6 Z 5G's specs in this domain, in all honesty.

Therefore, should these tips really line up as hypothesized, this device might launch soon as a budget alternative to the Reno6. Accordingly, it might debut somewhere under the ~US$440 mark, and, furthermore, do so in markets besides OPPO's native China soon enough.
