In an interview with TechCrunch, Carl Pei, the CEO of Nothing, talked about plans to build a custom operating system. Pei noted the market dominance of iOS and Android but says there's still potential for something different.

It's no secret that Android and iOS are dominating the mobile operating system market. This makes it quite difficult for new operating systems to compete. Despite the challenge, Nothing has plans on developing a custom OS. Carl Pei, Nothing's CEO, talked about it in a recent interview with TechCrunch.

Pei hints that a custom Nothing OS could make the company's smartphones stand more apart than those of its competitors. He emphasized that a distinct operating system could change how users interact with their phones. It could do that by leveraging data and offering personalization that Android skins don't currently offer.

In the interview, Pei says that AI advancements have made it easier to develop operating systems, and they could allow Nothing to offer unique features. However, he clarified that the vision is not an "AI OS." Instead, Pei's vision is an experience-driven operating system that uses AI as a tool.

The Nothing CEO further adds that the focus isn't on developing foundational elements. That means the custom operating system won't set itself apart with something like low-level OS components or drivers. Instead, it's more about the user experience.

Pei's vision for the custom Nothing OS also aims to meet user needs not met by existing platforms. It's important to note, however, that all of this is still in the idea phase. Pei didn't disclose anything about integration with existing app ecosystems, plans for user adoptions, or funding.
