MagyarComputex 2023 | No more AMD Advantage: MSI Alpha 17 launched with Ryzen 9 7945HX, RTX 4070, and world's first Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 Wi-Fi 7
The MSI Alpha series has traditionally been all-AMD gaming laptops with AMD Advantage. After the Alpha 15 in 2022, MSI is now offering the Alpha 17 powered by the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX Dragon Range APU. However, unlike past convention, the 2023 Alpha 17 gaming laptops are powered by Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 Series Laptop GPUs.
MSI is offering the Alpha 17 in three SKUs, at least in the US. Specifications are largely similar across all three models and are detailed in the table below. All share the same Ryzen 9 7945HX APU. SKUs 008US and 009US feature an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU while 006US comes with an RTX 4060 Laptop GPU.
All Alpha 17 SKUs sport a 17.3-inch QHD 240 Hz monitor with a 3 ms response time and 100% DCI-P3 coverage. This is a vast improvement, at least on paper, over the 2021 Alpha 17 variant we tested. Unfortunately, there is no FreeSync support.
Wi-Fi 7 networking fast becoming the norm in mobile devices, and all 2023 Alpha 17 models are the first to feature a Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 Wi-Fi 7 module together with Bluetooth 5.3 and Gigabit Ethernet.
