A Reddit user has 3D-printed a custom low-profile case for the Nintendo Switch 2, designed to keep the console protected during short commutes, without claiming to add bulk. The case snaps onto the device’s vent openings, shielding the screen and Joy-Con rails while reportedly staying slim enough to toss into a backpack.
Reddit user u/BalintCsala built the case out of a personal need: something light and compact for 20-minute bus rides that didn’t require a bulky travel pouch. The design clips onto the Switch 2’s vents and stays secure enough to lift, and even lightly shake, without the console slipping out, as per the creator.
Commenters pointed out the exposed analogue sticks as a weak spot, noting the risk of pressure damage and dust. In response, the creator quickly updated the design to include optional stick covers. Other community suggestions ranged from adding a felt lining to prevent screen scratches to tweaking the design for game cartridge storage and accessory compatibility.
The case was printed using PLA, though PETG is also an option, according to the creator. ABS was ruled out due to warping concerns. The full model is available to download for free via the original Reddit post, linked in the source section below, which also includes STEP files for anyone looking to customize the design.
Beyond the low-profile case, the Switch 2 community has been quietly building a library of practical, 3D-printed add-ons. One of the more popular designs is a simple side dust cover, also created by Reddit user u/BalintCsala, which clips onto the console’s Joy-Con rails and tries to keep dirt out of the exposed vents.
Meanwhile, Chongfun on Printables designed a single Joy-Con grip with integrated trigger extensions, aiming to offer a more comfortable grip and tactile control for handheld sessions. Together with the low-profile shell, DIY add-ons like these point to a growing ecosystem of community-built hardware which is open-source, easily shareable, and designed to try to solve everyday annoyances without waiting on official accessories.
