New report says that AMD and Nvidia graphics cards could get hefty price cuts by the end of August

The graphics card market (used and otherwise) has been flush with a bit too much stock thanks to cryptocurrency miners, AIBs and even OEMs trying to get rid of their old stock. Nvidia, in particular, has suffered significant losses due to reduced sales, promoting it to offer attractive discounts on high-end Ampere models. Now, a report from Chinese news outlet ZOL (via Wccftech) says that both Nvidia and AMD will further discount their offerings.

The publication heard from sources within the supply chain that Nvidia will offer even more discounts on its RTX 3000 series of graphics cards. AMD is expected to follow suit well, but their price cuts won't be nearly as attractive. The aforementioned price adjustments will be effective by the end of August, the report adds. However, it doesn't specify any region and could likely be referring to the local Chinese market. Then again, Nvidia and AMD will have to make these discounts available globally to make room for next-generation SKUs faster.

Both companies will face fierce competition from scalpers and cryptocurrency miners, though. Getting rid of graphics cards powered by high-end GPUs such as the Navi 21 and GA102 will be tricky, as they cannot be repurposed for laptop use, unlike their lower-end counterparts (Navi 22, Navi 23, GA103, GA104, etc.) Hence, high-end SKUs such as the Radeon RX 6900 and GeForce RTX 3080 could be discounted more than mid-range offerings, which, unfortunately are more sought after than their flagship counterparts.
