Apple's implementation of the Dynamic Island notch in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max has definitely elicited a good number of wows from both the press and users alike. Dynamic Island is a cool new feature that makes the notch more utilitarian by using that space for notifications and activities.
The obvious question now is whether this feature will be replicated in Android phones at some point as well. Looks like a Xiaomi MIUI theme developer already has something in the works. Named "Grumpy UI" in Chinese, the theme attempts to expand the notch area to display music and notifications and also allows setting the punch hole location for your device. The theme is currently available only in Chinese.
There was a previous attempt to mimic Dynamic Island features by a developer named sugertheme, which was initially rejected by Xiaomi. The OP, Vaibhav Jain, now reports that Xiaomi has approved the previous as well the current theme, and users can download them from the Xiaomi Theme Store.
The theme doesn't seem quite as polished as Apple's native implementation, but it goes on to show how seemingly unique features quickly become commonplace across platforms. In fact, the Honor V20 had notifications hugging the punch hole camera back in 2018 itself. The V20, being a China-exclusive device, didn't get much traction in the global press back then.
The MIUI theme is live in the Theme Store now and can be downloaded here, according to Jain. You can also search for it using the Chinese characters 怪脾气UI. Many users, however, report that the link is not accessible in their regions. Even if you manage to download the theme, it is possible that many of its features won't work on non-Chinese ROMs.
???? I'm just wondering why there hasn't been more invested in that ui part of the hole.
