Sennheiser is expanding its lineup with the HD 505, which are open-back over-ear headphones priced around $280. Despite their mid-range price, Sennheiser promises premium sound. The HD 505 can reproduce frequencies from 12 to 38,500 Hz with a distortion factor of less than 0.2 percent.
Sennheiser provides little information about the dynamic drivers that are manufactured in Ireland, other than that they are custom-made. The manufacturer's marketing highlights a harmonious and balanced sound with powerful bass and highs that do not sound uncomfortable, even at high volumes. With an impedance of 120 ohms, users should ensure that the HD 505 are properly powered by a corresponding headphone amplifier.
With a leatherette headband and metal ear cup covers, the HD 505 should feel like high-quality headphones. Meanwhile, their relatively low weight of 8.3 ounces ensures a comfortable fit even after hours of usage. Furthermore, the ear pads and cable can be replaced without tools. That said, open-back headphones are not well-suited for outdoor use because they do not isolate from ambient noise.
