New Samsung panel is world’s first with integrated touch, heart rate sensors
Samsung Display has unveiled a groundbreaking display panel that it is calling the Sensor OLED Display. It utilizes integrated sensing technology capable of identifying fingerprints on a screen and monitoring cardiovascular health. This sets it apart from conventional fingerprint sensors, which are usually included as separate modules beneath the OLED panel. Samsung Display has embedded an organic photodiode (OPD), a light sensor, directly into the panel itself during the process where it integrates OLED organic elements during fabrication.
The integration of the OPD within the panel allows for the detection of fingerprints and blood pressure readings across the entire screen. It also allows users to flexibly customize the recognition area according to their preferences, so they are not locked into using just one part of the display for biometric authentication, for example.
In addition to fingerprint recognition, the OPD-embedded panel has the capability to measure a user's heart rate, blood pressure, and stress level with just the touch of a finger. It does this by leveraging the reflective properties of OLED light, which vary based on the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels in the finger, the OPD captures the returning light and converts it into valuable health information. This enables the Sensor OLED Display to provide insights into various vital signs.
Samsung has yet to provide a timeline on when we might see the introduction of this technology in one or more of its devices, but does open up some very interesting pathways into making it even easier to keep track of health and related vital signs without needing to seek out specialist equipment.
