A wave of nostalgia hit the PS5 owners on Monday morning as they booted up their consoles and were greeted by the original PS1 animation and startup sound. This delightful surprise, part of the new PS5 feature update released on December 2, pays homage to the first PlayStation released 30 years ago.
Five new themes have been added to the PS5 as part of the 30th anniversary update; four are based on previous generation consoles—PS4, PS3, PS2, and PS1—and one is a special anniversary theme. After installing the update, users can access the retro designs by heading to Settings > PlayStation 30th Anniversary and then clicking the “Appearance and Sound” menu. From there, they can customize the look and feel of the PS5 UI to match their favorite generation of PlayStation. Notably, the update also adds the iconic PS1 boot animation along with the fan-favorite startup theme which still sounds just as futuristic as it did 30 years ago.
PS5 owners are understandably not happy with the fact that these retro themes aren’t a permanent addition and will eventually go away from their consoles. Some fans have even started a petition on Change.org, urging Sony to reconsider their decision.
December 3 marks the 30th anniversary of PlayStation and this feature update is just one of many special activities Sony has planned to celebrate PlayStation's success story. The company has also released a new video thanking fans and the gaming community and has kicked off its 30th Anniversary Sale, offering heavy discounts on more than 500 games and hardware products.
