The latest mobile monitor from Dasung utilizes a 12-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 color display in 16:10 format, which reaches a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and can be connected to a laptop and supplied with power via a single USB-C cable.

Unlike most mobile monitors on the market, the Dasung Paperlike Color 12 does not use an IPS or OLED panel, but an E Ink display. More specifically, an E Ink Kaleido 3 panel is installed, which uses a color filter to display 4096 colors in addition to grayscale, whereby the resolution is reduced in this case.

In grayscale mode, the display has a resolution of 2560 x 1600, but the manufacturer does not provide any information on the resolution achieved when displaying colors. The pixel density of the Kaleido 3 is usually halved when colors are displayed, in this case from around 250 PPI to 125 PPI. In addition to the lower pixel density, E Ink users also have to contend with slow response times, but the panel consumes very little power and remains legible in direct sunlight.

There is a white LED front light in the frame, allowing for use of the mobile monitor in the dark. Dasung packs the E Ink panel into a 5.3-millimeter thin, 439-gram light aluminum chassis. Connection to a PC and power supply are both via the same USB-C cable. In addition to an integrated stand, Dasung also offers a fold-out cover that allows the screen to be displayed at different angles.

Price and availability

The Dasung Paperlike Color 12 E-Ink monitor is available in China for 4999 yuan (approx. $696). The manufacturer has not yet confirmed any details about a possible international release.
