A design studio from Zurich is now offering the beta version of a smart display that remains legible in direct sunlight thanks to its E Ink panel and consumes very little energy, meaning it can be powered by just three AAA batteries.

Inklay packs a 9.7-inch E Ink display into a decorative wooden frame that can be set up or hung on a wall to display interactive information. The display has a 3:2 format, a resolution of 1200 x 825, and can display 16 shades of gray.

The device can be powered by three rechargeable AAA batteries, which should provide a runtime of one to two months, depending on use. Alternatively, the screen can also be continuously supplied with power via USB-C cable. To make this possible, the screen content is only updated between every 15 minutes and twelve hours, depending on the user's settings, as E Ink only consumes energy when the screen content is changed.

The WiFi connection to the internet is also only established for a brief moment while the display is being updated. The so-called "Inklay apps" can be selected via the associated smartphone app and installed on the smart screen. Apps for Strava and Solar Manager as well as an image gallery and a web browser are available to start with. The latter allows you to create your own dashboard or display any content from the web. As for dimensions, Inklay measures 24.2 x 17.9 x 1.3 centimeters.

Price and availability

Inklay is currently available directly via the manufacturer's website as a beta model, optionally with a walnut or oak frame, each for CHF 250 (approx. $276).
