Minisforum debuts UM480XT: High-end specs at wallet-friendly price
The Minisforum UM480XT is a stepped-down model of last year's UM590. At the heart, the mini PC has the Ryzen 7 4800H CPU. While this processor may be slightly dated, it still possesses the power needed to drive resource-intensive applications and games.
On the official website, Minisforum offers the UM480XT in five different configurations. Among them, the barebone unit is priced at US$229. But on Amazon, it's US$189.90, which is very affordable for a mini PC with 8 cores and 16 threads.
In addition to the barebone model, the UM480XT is available with 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB of RAM. As for storage, there are options with 512 GB and 1 TB SSD. Although, at the time of writing this, only the barebone, 16/512, and 32/512 models are available to purchase on the website.
Connectivity-wise, the UM480XT features one 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, one USB Type-C for data only, one USB 3.2 Type-C with DP 1.4 support, two USB 2.0 Type-A, one 3.5 mm audio jack combo, and two HDMI 2.0 ports. Minisforum has managed to fit all these ports into a chassis that's only 12.76 cm wide and 4.82 cm thick.
Overall, the Minisforum UM480XT is a complete solution for running productivity apps, handling multimedia, and even playing games. However, due to its dated processor, the mini PC is unlikely to deliver high frames in recently-released games. Still, with tuned-down settings and at HD resolution, most games should remain in the playable frame rate range.
