Reviews for the Microsoft Surface Book 3 15
We are pushing the almost unrivaled 15-inch convertible Surface Book 3 through our various test scenarios. Both the tablet hardware (i7 Ice Lake, G7 graphics) and the convertible hardware (GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q) look even more impressive compared to the predecessor (i7 Kaby Lake refresh, GTX 1060). But is the current model actually more powerful and is the difference noticeable enough to warrant an upgrade? These are questions we will attempt to answer in our review.

Microsoft Surface Book 3 (15)’s display has a touchscreen IPS panel (LP150QD112604) with a very high resolution (near 4K), comfortable viewing angles, very good contrast ratio, and 92% sRGB coverage. Its factory calibration is pretty decent, but when our Gaming and Web design profile is applied, the color-accuracy improves even further to a standard-matching level. This makes it usable for Web design, creative work, and e-commerce. However, our particular unit suffered from a severe non-uniformity in the top right corner, which declassifies it for the aforementioned workflow, should you desire perfection. On the bright side, the panel doesn’t use aggressive PWM so it’s generally safe for work.

It's not exactly surprising how much of a difference a different processor can make. AMD has gained ground on Intel, but the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3's Intel version is clearly the better model. Plus, its minimalist design brings it on par with the MacBook Pro. If only its screen were a little brighter and it packed a Thunderbolt 3 port.

The Surface Book 3 is an extremely premium piece of kit, with one of the best displays and keyboards we've used in a laptop to date. However, the high price tag and weak processor hold it back from true greatness.

The Microsoft Surface Book 3 is also a very expensive laptop for its specs. The model I have, with 512GB of storage and 32GB of RAM, costs $2,799, which is pricey for a laptop with an ultrabook CPU. But you don’t buy a Surface Book for power. You buy it for its incredible industrial design and unique functionality — which is nearly impossible to find in any other laptop.

Microsoft's update to the 15-inch Surface Book 2, the aptly named Surface Book 3 ($1,600 at Best Buy), remains essentially the same. It's still the laptop that tries to be all things to all people: it's a clamshell, a convertible and a standalone tablet, where most laptops settle for two out of three. But in the past couple of years the competition for creative dollars has gotten a lot tougher while the Surface Book has pretty much stood still. If you want its exact combination of convertible/detachable/clamshell operation or want to stick with it as an upgrade from the Surface Book 2, it won't disappoint.

The Microsoft Surface Book 3's got all the makings of the laptop/tablet hybrid that we're still looking for, giving both a solid tablet and excellent laptop experiences. But as comparative benchmark tests have shown in this Surface Book 3 review, even in its more expensive configurations its performance, battery life and display rarely stand out from the pack, only rarely actually beating competitors.

With an advanced mechanical locking system for the keyboard base, powerful graphics processing, multiple cameras and batteries, and a brilliant near-4K display, the Surface Book 3 is an innovative, excellent detachable laptop.

I started this review by admitting the Surface Book used to be my dream laptop. That luster has faded over the years, and Microsoft hasn't done much to give this unique 2-in-1 a new polish. And while it's the only device to offer a genuine laptop and tablet in one package, there are limitations to each of its forms.

A slightly thicker Surface Laptop 3 with a good GPU would appeal to most of the developers and creatives at which Microsoft is trying to aim this machine. The Surface Book 3 is certainly unique, as it’s always been, but the tablet functionality is aimed at such a small market that I’m not entirely sure who would pick this over Dell’s new XPS 15 or XPS 17 or a gaming laptop like Razer’s Blade 15. You’ll get more for your money elsewhere, unless you really want a detachable display. The Surface Book 3 is still the only solid choice for that.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q: Mid range dedicated graphics card for thin and light laptops based on the GTX 1660 Ti with reduced clock speeds and optimized drivers.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
i7-1065G7: Ice Lake-based quad-core processor for thin and light laptops. The four cores are clocked at 1.3 GHz to 3.9 GHz and should offer 18% more IPC (instructions per clock) than the previous generations (and therefore partly close the clock speed gap). Produced on first-gen 10 nm Intel process.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

Microsoft smartphones and tablets have been tested since 2012. There are many reviews with average ratings. The reader's interest is quite given, but the market share is not big enough for the Top 5 smartphone manufacturers (as of 2016).
77.13%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
