A tied-up Xbox controller is making waves on Reddit thanks to a DIY “fix” involving rubber bands – a supposed “ultimate solution” to stick drift. What looks like a repair tip, however, is more likely a meme, or simply a way for players to vent their frustration over declining controller quality.

Console players know the struggle all too well: even when the sticks aren’t being touched, the character starts drifting on its own – classic stick drift. Usually caused by worn-out potentiometers or dirty sensors, this issue can push any gamer to the brink. That seems to be the case for Reddit user u/sipthestreets, who wrapped rubber bands around an Xbox controller’s analog sticks and posted a photo on the r/gaming subreddit captioned“Ultimate stick drift solution.” The post quickly went viral, earning over 5,000 upvotes and 400 comments in just 20 hours.

It’s unclear whether the original poster was being serious or simply venting their frustration over stick drift. So far, they haven’t offered any explanation or joined the discussion in the comments. The post may have been born out of sheer annoyance – or simply a desire to go viral. At first glance, using rubber bands to gently pull the stick in one direction to counteract drift in the other might not sound entirely absurd. In reality, though, it’s highly unlikely to be an effective fix.

In most cases, stick drift isn’t caused by the stick being mechanically out of place but by faulty electronic readings inside the controller. Tiny potentiometers measure the stick’s position through resistance values, but over time these components can wear down or gather dust, causing them to send inaccurate signals. As a result, the game registers movement even when there is none. A rubber band pulling the stick in one direction won’t solve these signal issues – in fact, the added tension could even speed up mechanical wear over time.

Most Reddit users seem to recognize the post as a joke, which explains why the thread is full of sarcastic comments. One of the top replies reads: “Stick drifting drives me crazy. Clearly, it’s doing the same to you.” Others accuse the poster of “karma farming,” pointing out that similar memes have circulated before. Amid the jokes and frustration – with Sony frequently mentioned for its controller issues – some users offer more constructive advice. They suggest real fixes like using contact cleaner, adjusting software dead zones or switching to controllers with Hall effect sticks, such as the GameSir G7 SE (which currently sells for around $45 on Amazon).
