Legend of Grimrock 2, developed by Finnish studio Almost Human Games, launched in October 2014 as the sequel to the classic dungeon crawler Legend of Grimrock. Players take control of four prisoners who wash ashore on the mysterious island of Nex. The island – filled with ancient ruins, enchanted forests and dark dungeons – is ruled by a sinister master who places every imaginable obstacle in the group’s path.
At the heart of the game lies classic dungeon crawler gameplay. Players explore winding caves, solve intricate puzzles and battle enemies in real time, all from a first-person perspective. Movement takes place on an invisible grid, with both the party and monsters advancing step by step – forward, backward or sideways. This system makes tactical positioning crucial for survival.
In GameStar’s German review, Legend of Grimrock 2 stood out for its complex and rewarding puzzles. These range from pressure plates and hidden switches to secret doors and intricate logic challenges that, according to the editors, are as tough as they are satisfying. The game also offers deep character customization, featuring eight classes and five races, along with a crafting system for potions, bombs and gear. While the visuals have clearly aged in the decade since release, they still deliver a surprisingly atmospheric experience.
Since its launch, Legend of Grimrock 2 has gathered around 3,800 reviews on Steam, with an impressive 90% rating it positively. On Metacritic, the game holds a Metascore of 85 and a User Score of 8.0. GameStar awarded it a solid 80 out of 100, praising not only the challenging puzzles but also the dark atmosphere and the open-ended design of the island. After a linear introduction, Nex opens up completely, with dungeons that can be tackled in any order – a definite highlight for fans of exploration. However, the game also faced some criticism for its increasingly repetitive combat and consistently flat storyline.
80% discount on Steam
Legend of Grimrock 2 usually sells for around $24 on Steam, but until October 13 it’s available at an 80% discount for under $5. According to SteamDB, such discounts are fairly common, though the game has never been cheaper. The deal is particularly appealing for those who enjoy gaming on the go: Legend of Grimrock 2 is rated “Verified” for the Steam Deck, meaning it runs smoothly on Valve’s handheld (which is currently available on Amazon for around $625).
