Mechanical Pixel has been uploading a number of concept devices on the YouTube channel, and one of the latest videos has garnered quite a lot of popularity. The concept phone in question is called H-One Pro, and it has what the designer calls a "restrained" modular design.
Instead of having multiple modular sections like Google's abandoned Project Ara, it has only one. The concept design shows a rectangular section that can house swappable components. Per the designer, this modular section can be used to add a high-resolution camera module, which can be quite handy for improving the photography performance of the device.
The concept video shows that the modular section can house a battery module as well, which can eventually eliminate the need to carry a power bank around (pocket-sized INIU 10K power bank curr. $32.99 on Amazon). Besides these two, the concept H-One Pro is shown to also be compatible with other modular components, such as:
- 256 GB storage module
- Speaker module
- LCD display
- E-ink display
For those who want to attach something purely cosmetic, the concept phone is said to have blocks that are made purely of brass, wood, or custom elements. However, it's worth noting that all of these are nothing but concept modules, and even the device, the H-One Pro, is not an actual product.
But, of course, the design that H-One Pro is going for seems to be more approachable than the other concepts because it acknowledges the technical limitations of such modular devices. However, it's yet to be seen whether this restrained approach could be turned into a reality.
