Major Marathon update 1.0.5 adds Cryo Archive, downed exfil, and UI tweaks

Marathon update 1.0.5 adds the new Cryo Archive zone, lets players activate exfil beacons while downed, and rolls out a long list of changes across combat, contracts, UI, voice chat, stability, weapons, mods, and audio. Bungie also tied several new loot additions directly to Cryo Archive, including implant perks and mods that can only be found there.
Cryo Archive is the headline addition
The biggest content addition in update 1.0.5 is Cryo Archive, which Bungie says has now been added to the game. The patch also adds three random-rolled implant perks that can only be found on implants looted from Cryo Archive: Covert Recovery, Freeloader, and Panic Response. Bungie also added three Cryo Archive-only mods called Punishment, Testament, and Hurricane.
Bungie also made a Sponsored Kit economy change in the same section, as Rook no longer receives a surplus Sponsored Kit on death. In our review, we described Marathon as an extraction shooter with brilliant tension, strong combat, and striking atmosphere, though brutal onboarding and constant friction made it frustrating.
Combat and Runner changes touch several core systems
On the combat side, players can now activate exfil beacons while downed. Bungie also reduced camera shake from incoming melee and knife attacks, increased the post-run spectator camera timeout from 30 seconds to 120 seconds, lowered the intensity of the Hacked status screen effect, and fixed issues involving finishers, revive timer shaders, and ability activations becoming desynced with the server.
Runner-specific fixes are spread across multiple classes and implants. Assassin’s Smoke Puck should now change appearance based on the equipped shell style while activating Shadow Dive. Thief’s Pickpocket Drone can no longer loot players during the active exfil animation, its on-screen prompt now updates correctly to changed keybinds or controller mappings, and Bungie says high-speed grapples were also addressed as a network-stability issue. Triage gets a fix for Battery Overcharge being blocked near max heat, while Rook no longer has a Runner Level requirement and can now be used at Runner Level 0. Bungie also fixed two issues tied to Graceful Landing V5.
The patch also includes UESC fixes, with Bungie addressing repeated ladder use and several bugs that could leave AI frozen in place or unresponsive.
Contracts, events, and map-specific fixes are part of the patch
Contracts and Events changes focus on clarity and progression logic. Bungie says contract and activity waypoint icons now have better visual clarity, crews carrying both Coordinate Datapads must now bring both to the cache location before loot is revealed, and some completion blockers affecting MIDA Order/Chaos 1/1, Traxus Return on Investment 3/5, and Traxus Liaison have been fixed. The studio also fixed a case where contract UI could fall out of sync between crew members during a run.
Map-specific fixes are also included. On Perimeter, intercept dropships in South Relay should no longer clip through the environment, Overflow tripwires should no longer float in mid-air, and DCON should now appear on the overhead map when required by contract. On Dire Marsh, Bungie fixed Lockdown-event dropships flying through player space in Algae Ponds, added crew-feed text when pinging the Stabilization Device and Anomalous Matter, and fixed a Traxus Liaison issue where the Commander could despawn. On Outpost, encounters spawning on the roof of Flight Control should now engage players correctly.
UI, rewards, vault, and voice chat make up a large part of the update
A substantial portion of update 1.0.5 focuses on user interface and quality-of-life changes. Bungie fixed the “Welcome to Tau Ceti” achievement, changed Armory tooltips so they primarily show purchase cost, and added new Codex challenges for Ranked and Cryo Archive. The Codex section also includes fixes for flickering inspection text, challenge wording, incorrect challenge tracking, a Destroyer challenge completion bug, overflow item loss when claiming Seasonal Level rewards, and a stray “Compatible Weapons” string appearing on non-weapon items.
In-run and lobby changes are also extensive. Bungie improved the readability of the Revive prompt, made some waypoints fade while aiming down sights, and says exfilling with a Temporal Fragment will now produce variable rewards based on seasonal Runner Level. The lobby now warns players when they have overflow items, adds shortcuts to open the Loadout menu, clarifies the Missing Equipment warning around Health or Shield consumables, and fixes an issue that prevented commonly found items from appearing when selecting map regions.
Elsewhere in the UI and social layer, activity icons pinged from the overhead map should now show waypoints more reliably, Premium Rewards Pass Voucher items should no longer appear in inventory, the Runner Level Up rewards screen should no longer appear blank, and the Runner Connections panel now includes a Ranked tab. Bungie also fixed Runner Connections scrolling for players with large friend lists, corrected item rarity for the Luxe Palace, Overdrive-TSL, and Cyber Red Runner Shells, increased Vault stack sizes for consumables, ammo, salvage, and grenades, and added filter tabs for keys and backpacks.
Voice chat is part of the update as well. Bungie added Crew Voice Push-To-Talk support for consoles and gamepads while in a run, added a Tap push-to-talk option, and fixed several voice chat interruptions and inconsistencies. The patch also includes sticker and charm placement optimization on a handful of weapons.
Stability, weapons, and mods round out the patch
On the technical side, Bungie fixed a crash tied to opening the map on Perimeter and added AMD Anti-Lag 2 Low Latency to Video Settings.
Weapons and equipment changes include fixes for Ammo Crates placed too close to walls or terrain, Cardio Kick’s HUD icon behavior, Claymores not taking splash damage when attached to other objects, and knife cosmetics unequipping after a failed exfil. Bungie also fixed the V75 Scar’s Ram-Page Mag ricochet issue, reduced leftward recoil on both the WSTR Combat Shotgun and Misriah 2442, changed the WSTR’s interrupt timing, damage falloff, and aim assist behavior, updated the BR33 Volley Rifle’s Lockout Muzzle Brake Prestige mod, so it also suppresses weapon fire, and fixed a Longshot gold-mod counter issue.
The Mods section is similarly busy. Drag-and-drop can now remove weapon mods directly from weapons. Endless Runner’s Superior rarity string was corrected. Opportunist now has a 3.5-second cooldown. Thermals now properly highlight invisible UESC combatants, ticks, and tick nests, a generator tooltip was corrected, Cloudfeather Chamber now properly grants its Weight Reduction bonus, and suppressors no longer apply the health-display scramble and 2D damage-indicator effects to victims.
Audio changes are smaller, but they are still included
The Audio section is short, but Bungie still made two changes there: UESC spawn-in animations will now play all associated audio, and the range at which players can hear other players in combat has been reduced.
Well done, Bungie, for listening to the community. As a small personal side note, “The One About Cryo Archive” may or may not be a nod to Friends, but as a fan of the show, I could not help noticing the similarity.
