Magix has unveiled Vegas Pro 23, a feature-packed video editing software with GPU-acceleration. Unlike other subscription-based video editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Vegas Pro can be purchased for lifetime use for as low as $219.99 (from Magix or Amazon). The software is compatible with Microsoft Windows computers, including those running on the Snapdragon X ARM-based CPU.
The field of video editing software can be roughly divided into the top-tier, mid-tier, and lower-tier offerings. At the top-tier sits Avid Media Composer, the only app used to edit all Hollywood blockbusters making over $500 million. The lower-tier includes offerings such as freeware OpenShot and Cyberlink PowerDirector. The most popular mid-tier offering has been Adobe Premiere Pro due to its integration with other Adobe products such as Photoshop. Others include Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve and Vegas Pro 23, which was formerly owned by Sony from 2003 until 2016.
Vegas Pro 23 adds the GPU-accelerated Vegas Core Engine that leverages the power of modern graphics cards (such as this Nvidia 5090 GPU sold on Amazon) to speed up color grading, enable real-time previews, and provide smoother playback of high-resolution, multi-track projects, according to Magix.
The interface has been updated for greater layout flexibility, with track-level effects editing in the timeline. The video editor can now capture gameplay directly, eliminating the need to turn to Windows Game Bar or OBS to first capture gameplay.
Vegas Pro is also known for its wide selection of audio features, including auto-ducking of background sounds during speech, tempo detection for precise video alignment to music beats, and AI-based features such as speech-to-text.
