Xiaomi has shared a few details about MIUI 14, an OS update that the company has dubbed ‘Project Razor’. While the name may seem strange at first, Xiaomi claims its focus with MIUI 14 is to reduce or cut system waste, hence the term ‘Project Razor’. As expected, Xiaomi asserts that it will allow people to uninstall more system apps than ever before, with the company going as far as to remark that MIUI 14 will have the ‘fewest non-uninstallable apps’ of any Android-based OS.
MIUI 14 should take up less built-in storage space too, with the OS billed as being ‘23% lighter’ than MIUI 13. With Xiaomi blaming the increase in firmware package sizes on years of Android system updates, it remains to be seen whether MIUI 14 is any ‘lighter’ than earlier MIUI versions, such as MIUI 11 or MIUI 12. Regardless, the company still heralds MIUI 14 as being as ‘light as a swallow’, a species that is perhaps not best known for being lightweight.
Separately, Xiaomi has announced new memory controls within MIUI for its 14th version. As far as we can tell, this is only an extension of reducing how much storage space MIUI takes up rather than an improved task killer. MIUI 14 will debut on December 1, this Thursday in China. First available in the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro, it remains to be seen when the OS update will launch outside Xiaomi’s home market. Similarly, it is unclear whether MIUI 14 will be available globally first for existing devices or if Xiaomi plans to delay its arrival until it starts selling the Xiaomi 13 series in more countries.
