MagyarLenovo ThinkPad: Anniversary Edition planned for October release (Update: Teaser Image)
Besides the ThinkPad, there isn´t any other laptop-brand with a 25 year history. The first IBM ThinkPad was announced in October 1992, so this October is the 25th anniversary of the brand. Lenovo will celebrate this occasion with a special limited Anniversary ThinkPad. This was announced today at Lenovo´s "Transform" event in New York.
Lenovo did not release many details about this new ThinkPad, except for the release date: October. They also described it as a model with the latest technology but elements of older ThinkPad-designs.
This could mean that the Thinkpad Anniversary Edition is the result of Lenovo´s ThinkPad Retro project. Two years ago, the leading ThinkPad designer David Hill teased the ThinkPad-fans with a concept of a new ThinkPad that incorporated many of the design-traits of older ThinkPads, including an old style 7-row keyboard.
Apart from the announcement of the Anniversary model, Lenovo also revealed a special "ThinkPad 25" logo. This logo has the "Pad" in ThinkPad colored in the RGB-colors of the old IBM ThinkPad logo.
ThinkPads have a rather large fan-scene for a PC brand. In the past year Lenovo has changed the ThinkPad design in many ways, some of these decisions have been criticized by long time fans. One of these new design elements was the new keyboard, which featured a Chiclet design and 6 row layout, this was first introduced with the ThinkPad Edge in 2010. Current ThinkPads feature the same keyboard. Another example for a controversial design was the five-button-clickpad with integrated TrackPoint buttons, which was first build into the ThinkPad T431s. After much criticism by fans, customers and also reviewers, Lenovo reverted the TrackPoint button design back to the old one in 2015.
Update: Today, David Hill has posted a blog-post about the anniversary ThinkPad, confirming that it is indeed the Retro ThinkPad. The blog post didn´t contain many concrete details, but it did contain a teaser-image of the special edition ThinkPad with the old ThinkPad keyboard and also the multi-colored ThinkPad-logo.
