The Lenovo ThinkPad A285-20MW000JMH is a powerful 12.5-inch laptop. It belongs to the ThinkPad series, which means it features great security and ruggedness for business and working-on-the-go purposes. The ThinkPad A285 features state-of-the-art biometric security and data encryption, making sure it achieves a high level of enterprise-grade protection. Users have ready access to internal hardware components for faster troubleshooting or upgrading, which means users can service the laptop by themselves. The ThinkPad A285's discrete Trusted Platform Module (dTPM) encrypts user data and passwords. The built-in 720p HD camera includes ThinkShutter, a privacy cover that lets users decide when their camera can see. Like all ThinkPads PCs, the A285 is tested against 12 military-grade requirements and more than 200 quality checks to ensure it runs in extreme conditions. The Lenovo ThinkPad A285 starts at 1.26 kgs/2.78 lbs, which makes it very easy to carry around for work. Furthermore, users can travel without worries with up to 10.2 hours of battery life. It can also be charged quickly enough with the RapidCharge technology that charges the system by up to 80% in just 60 minutes.

Under the hood, it has an AMD Ryzen 5 2500U processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and an AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics processor. The graphics card makes visuals more realistic and colours more vivid without lag time. Aside from that, the Ryzen 5 makes multitasking a breeze. As for the display, the Lenovo ThinkPad A285 has a 12.5-inch IPS 16:9 panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixel and a pixel density of 176 PPI. The ThinkPad comes with four USB-C 3.2 ports, an HDMI port and an SD card reader. It also supports DisplayPort 1.4 via USB-C. If more input/output ports are desired, users can attach the ThinkPad Pro Dock (sold separately). It can be shared across most of the 2018 ThinkPad models. The new USB-C side mechanical dock easily connects and automatically levels the device. Once docked, the ThinkPad stays securely in place. Besides, it has a 4G LTE-A option which will keep users connected regardless of WiFi availability. In conclusion, the Lenovo ThinkPad A285-20MW000JMH is a very light and small laptop with good performance. It is a very handy device for working professionals to work on the go, especially in some uncommon environments such as construction sites.

Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

AMD Vega 8: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 8 CUs (= 512 shaders) and a clock of up to 1100 MHz.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

R5 2500U: Mobile APU that integrates four Zen cores clocked at 2 to 3.6 GHz. The TDP is configurable between 12 to 25 Watt (15 W nominal) and the integrated Radeon RX Vega 8 is clocked at up to 1100 MHz.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

12.50":

This range of display format is largely the upper limit for tablets and the lower limit for subnotebooks.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small in size and therefore easily portable. The tiny display has the added advantage of requiring little power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is exhausting for the eyes. High resolutions, which one is used to from a standard laptop, are almost not usable.

The same applies to tablets in this size range.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

80%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
