Lenovo Legion Go S gaming handheld drops by 44%, sports 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage

Following a series of price bumps courtesy of the ongoing DRAM crisis, the Lenovo Legion Go S handheld, among many others, became prohibitively expensive for many gamers. However, decent first-party offers keep showing up every now and then which make life easier, such as the one we're about to cover.

Thanks to a generous 44% discount, the Lenovo Legion Go S handheld with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage is now available to purchase for just under $640, featuring the AMD Ryzen Z2 Go SoC and SteamOS at its heart and soul.

Legion Go S gaming handheld - SteamOS to the rescue

According to our in-depth review of the "affordable" gaming handheld, the AMD Ryzen Z2 Go powering the system performs admirably, even more so in SteamOS as compared to Windows. Raw CPU performance is in the same range as an entry-level Core Ultra 5 115U, while GPU performance is roughly in the same tier as an Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU.

We found gaming performance to be quite decent, pulling in almost 38 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p in the highest-end "Performance" mode. Interestingly, performance in SteamOS is a whopping 30-45% better than in Windows. Battery life is pretty decent, with the handheld lasting around 1.6 hours of playing Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p with brightness set to 150 nits. In WiFi browsing, the Legion Go S lasts almost 10 hours.

The 8-inch 1200p IPS display features a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a maximum brightness of around 540 nits. Almost 99% of the sRGB color gamut is covered, which should be good enough for most content consumption. Once calibrated, color accuracy is also pretty decent.

We had no major complaints with any other aspect of the device. The chassis quality is very decent, and we were quite happy with the buttons and input surfaces. Unsurprisingly, the triggers as well as the joysticks are equipped with Hall-effect sensors.
