CES 2021 | Lenovo IdeaPad 5G promises untethered roaming and comes with a hands-free Alexa Show Mode
Cellular connectivity in Lenovo laptops has been traditionally the realm of ThinkPads and the Yoga series. In fact, Lenovo introduced the Yoga 5G powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx 5G SoC during CES 2020. Now, with the introduction of the IdeaPad 5G, it is the turn of the IdeaPad series to hop on to the 5G bandwagon
Lenovo is offering the IdeaPad in both 5G and 4G LTE versions. Weighing less than 1.17 kg and sporting a less than 0.6-inch thickness, the new IdeaPad seeks to combine form and function with always-on connectivity.
Powering the IdeaPad 4G/5G is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Compute Platform. You get a Snapdragon SC8180X for the LTE version and a Snapdragon SC8180XP if you opt for the 5G variant. Powering the graphics component is an Adreno 680 GPU while a Snapdragon X55 modem handles the 5G WWAN. 8 GB LPDDRX RAM comes as standard while storage options include 256 GB and 512 GB NVMe SSDs.
The IdeaPad 5G offers a FHD display with a 300-nit brightness and 100% sRGB coverage.Powering all this hardware is a 51 WHr battery that the company claims lasts for up to 20 hours during 1080p video playback.
Lenovo says that the IdeaPad 5G is built for collaboration thanks to user-facing 2 W Dolby Audio speakers and a dual-array microphone. Other connectivity options include 2x USB Type-C 3.2 Gen1 ports, 1x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A port, a combo audio jack, and a SIM card holder.
The Lenovo IdePad 5G also features an Alexa Show Mode that transforms the laptop into a hands-free, full-screen experience controlled fully by Alexa voice commands. With this, users can play music, open apps, check the weather, set reminders, and control smart home devices using Alexa voice commands. Alexa Show Mode will also be made available for select Yoga and IdeaPad models in Q2 2021.
The Lenovo IdeaPad 5G/4G will be available from May. Pricing will be made available at a later date.
