CES 2021 | The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro and 5i Pro are compelling media and light gaming machines with 2.5K 90/120Hz displays
While the Intel and AMD models share many of the same features, Lenovo uses the thermal headroom in the 16-inch IdeaPad 5 Pro to pair next-generation Ryzen and RTX chips. Users can switch between 60 Hz or higher 90 Hz (14-inch) and 120 Hz (16-inch) refresh rates on these 16:10 (2560 x 1600) displays.
Today Lenovo launches the IdeaPad 5 Pro and IdeaPad 5i Pro, bringing higher performance and new screen options to the IdeaPad line up. Continuing the naming trend from the last few years, the 5 Pro is equipped with AMD Ryzen processors, while the 5i Pro uses Intel Core processors.
The AMD and Intel versions both include 14-inch and 16-inch models with the available features mirroring each other in most areas. A few areas do differ, starting with the choice between Intel 11th Gen or unidentified next-generation AMD Ryzen CPUs, likely to be 5000-series (Cezanne/Lucienne).
The RAM and GPU options max out at 16 GB and the Nvidia MX450 respectively in the Intel models and smaller AMD model. However, purchasers can configure the 16-inch 5 Pro with up to 32 GB RAM and a next-generation GeForce RTX graphics card, likely to be an RTX 30 card (mobile Ampere). The larger Intel unit supports Thunderbolt 4.
This higher specification model overlaps with the position occupied by the older IdeaPad Gaming 3, which was an entry-level gaming laptop using a Ryzen 5 or Core i5 and GTX 1650 Ti. With the Gaming 3 temporarily out of stock on Lenovo's US website, it's not a stretch to think that the larger IdeaPad 5 Pro could be replacing the gaming model that sometimes seemed awkwardly sandwiched between the regular IdeaPads and the Legion line.
The displays are now a more friendly multi-use 16:10 aspect ratio at 2.5K (1560 x 1600) resolution. Those who want faster refresh rates can choose 90 Hz on the 14-inch panel or 120 Hz on the 16-inch panel. A new Fn+R hotkey has joined Lenovo's performance switching Q-Control (Fn +Q) for switching between the display's max refresh rate and 60 Hz when battery saving is most important.
The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro and 5i Pro are available from April 2021 at 829 Euro (US$1020) and 899 Euro (US$1100) respectively. German prices include sales tax.

I grew up in a family surrounded by technology, starting with my father loading up games for me on a Commodore 64, and later on a 486. In the late 90's and early 00's I started learning how to tinker with Windows, while also playing around with Linux distributions, both of which gave me an interest for learning how to make software do what you want it to do, and modifying settings that aren't normally user accessible. After this I started building my own computers, and tearing laptops apart, which gave me an insight into hardware and how it works in a complete system. Now keeping up with the latest in hardware and software news is a passion of mine.
