Leaked Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro camera specifications point towards minor changes for this year's flagships

Developer Kuba Wojciechowski has dug into decrypted code fragments in Android 13 Beta, the latest version of which Google released earlier this week. Writing on Twitter, Wojciechowski claims to have discovered camera details about the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. For reference, Google has already teased the Pixel 7 series in May at Google I/O 2022.

According to Wojciechowski, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will feature the same Samsung ISOCELL GN1 as their Pixel 6 series predecessors. Also, Wojciechowski claims that the Sony IMX381 will handle ultra-wide-angle optics, which he adds that the Pixel 6 series used too. As far as we are aware, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro rely on the Sony IMX386 for their ultra-wide-angle cameras though, as does the Pixel 6a. Potentially, this is a mistake on Wojciechowksi's part, as he later acknowledges that the Pixel 6 series uses the Sony IMX386 for ultra-wide-angle shots.

As earlier leaks suggested, the Pixel 7 should match the Pixel 7 Pro's front-facing camera, the Samsung ISOCELL 3J1. Incidentally, the Pixel 6 Pro also features the Samsung ISOCELL 3J1. Theoretically, the inclusion of this camera should provide the Pixel 7's front-facing camera with dual-pixel autofocus, 4K video capabilities and Google's long-awaited facial recognition software.

Purportedly, the Pixel 7 Pro will offer 5x optical zoom like its predecessor too, but with the Samsung ISOCELL GM1 instead of the Sony IMX586 in the Pixel 6 Pro. Wojciechowski speculates that using another ISOCELL sensor here could improve more consistent results when switching between the ISOCELL GN1 and ISOCELL GM1.
