Latest Xperia 1 IV rumor claims Sony's 2022 flagship will have a quad-cam setup with two telephoto lenses
Fish out the packets of salt, as a pinch is required for the following Sony Xperia 1 IV-related information. Unsurprisingly, there are high expectations for the 2022 flagship, as there are every year for the latest Xperia 1 model from Sony. Smartphone purists and fans of high-grade visual/optical software and hardware will want to see a Mark 4 variant of the Sony Xperia 1 device that breaks the mold in the right places. Having a quad-cam configuration loaded with two telephoto lenses à la Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra would certainly be a change of pace.
According to a source on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, who has consistently shared information about Sony’s phones in the past, an engineering sample of the Xperia 1 IV featured a quad-cam setup with this format:
- Main (wide-angle) camera: 48 MP, 1.22 um, 1/1.28", native Bayer
- Ultra-wide-angle camera: 48 MP, 0.7 um, 1/2.43", Quad Bayer (pixel binning to 12 MP)
- Telephoto camera: 48 MP, 0.7 um, 1/2.43", Quad Bayer (pixel binning to 12 MP)
- Periscope telephoto camera: 1/2” (no other details)
If accurate, this would be a considerable change from the setup of the Xperia 1 III, which came with a 12 MP triple-cam system and a ToF sensor. It’s best to remain skeptical for the time being, as there could be an issue with the machine translation. But there has been an additional rumor that the ultra-wide-angle sensor and telephoto lens would follow a similar basis as the setup found in the Apple iPhone 13 Pro phones. It has also been previously rumored that the Sony Xperia 1 IV would sport a quad-cam setup, with a possible 48 MP + 50 MP (cropped to 48 MP) + 48 MP + 48 MP configuration on the cards.
