Rumors concerning the 2022 Sony Xperia 1 and its camera equipment have been floating around for weeks, and now the company’s latest teaser has suitably focused on what fans can expect from the upcoming flagship. A major camera revision has frequently been predicted for the Xperia 1 IV, and while the video clip doesn’t provide any specifics, it certainly hints at big things to come, or at least a big optical lens.
Sony has recruited Pierre T. Lambert, a noted travel and adventure photographer, to briefly discuss the merits of what could be the Mark 4 model of the Xperia 1 (the official name has yet to be confirmed). This is what he has to say in the brief clip about the mysterious content-creator-friendly phone:
It feels as if you had a big optical lens in your hand with a great camera. It just adds range, not only in terms of focal length but also in terms of creative possibilities.
An alleged Sony Xperia 1 IV camera specs leak in April offered these details for the device:
- Main (wide-angle) camera: 48 MP, 1.22 um, 1/1.28", native Bayer
- Ultra-wide-angle camera: 48 MP, 0.7 um, 1/2.43", Quad Bayer (pixel binning to 12 MP)
- Telephoto camera: 48 MP, 0.7 um, 1/2.43", Quad Bayer (pixel binning to 12 MP)
- Periscope telephoto camera: 1/2” (no other details)
If this leak is accurate then it would certainly seem sufficient, at least on paper, to aid users with their content creation, especially in combination with Sony’s lenses and camera software package. A much older rumor, from May 2021, indicated that all the sensors in the successor to the Xperia 1 III would be provided by Sony.
A known Xperia leaker based on Weibo previously stated that the next-generation device from Sony would sport a zoom lens akin to the one found in the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which features a 240 mm unit, and this would satisfy the claim of a “big optical lens”. There’s also another glimpse at the 2022 Xperia 1 itself in the new teaser video, with the clip beginning with the side of the phone bearing the hardware buttons slowly coming into view.
