Lao Zhang's Yoo Y1: A polished effort to shake up the premium retro gaming market

A Chinese handheld designer is stirring up the retro community’s pot with another ambitious project that could be his most polished and accessible handheld yet. Just to give you an idea, many retro handheld owners are taking notice.
Previously, Zhang became popular for his work on the GKD Pixel series and also the LG Wing handheld back in 2022. Recently, Zhang appeared on a popular Chinese social media platform accessible via Baidu to show off his Yoo Y1 retro handheld.
The Yoo Y1 is a meticulously crafted, sleek Android handheld with some premium finishing touches. Word of the Yoo Y1 quickly spread to the West and made its way to the Retro Handhelds Discord, giving retro gamers a closer look at the new device.
The Yoo Y1, at a glance, stands out for its minimalist glass front and display, paired with dual TMR analog sticks, Hall-Effect shoulder buttons, and a rigid frame that puts it a step above many other budget handhelds on the market.
The retro community’s reception is currently nothing short of excitement. Retro Gaming With Dreadfred took to X after looking at the Yoo Y1 and said:
Lao Zhang, creator of the legendary Snowcake handheld and also part of the GKD team that brought us the GKD Pixel and Pixel 2, is showing off the newest handheld, the Yoo Y1. Here are the known specs so far:
- 3:2 1620 x 1080 screen, same as the KTR1 2
- Metal frame
- Hall Effect triggers
- TMR (tunneling magnetoresistance) joysticks
- 6,000mAh large battery
- Expected to go on sale in June.
So far, the spec sheet for the controls alone is a step above what many premium handhelds offer. The Yoo Y1 features a 3:2, 4.5-inch IPS display at 1620 x 1080 for playing older games in retro 4:3 aspect ratios or modern 16:9 with minimal black bars, TMR joysticks with tighter accuracy, a higher polling rate, and little risk of stick drift, and a beefy 6,000mAh battery, which should be more than enough to play SNES, N64, PlayStation, GameCube, Dreamcast, and PSP games for hours without plugging it in.
The processor for the Yoo Y1 has yet to be confirmed, and what’s under the hood of this premium handheld could make or break Zhang’s new project. The more headroom it has for emulation, the better the retro handheld experience will be.
If the release version ships packing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite, it could give Retroid’s Pocket lineup, the Ayn Thor, and the GKD 350H some tough competition.
