Is Xiaomi changing its strategy? Affordable Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G is perfect for a beach vacation

Xiaomi is no longer positioning its successor of the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G (prices start around $340 at Amazon.com) as an all-rounder focused on value for money, but rather as an ideal companion for outdoor use on the go. After all, our review of the Xiaomi phone highlights two standout features in particular: exceptionally long battery life and an extra-bright OLED screen, paired with excellent durability.
This “new direction” makes the Redmi smartphone a very good option for any outdoor activity, whether at the beach, while hiking, or on a summer trip to the lake.
Affordable Xiaomi smartphone with a super-bright OLED screen and an XXL battery
A key factor in its suitability for summer and vacations is its rugged chassis, which goes beyond the usual mid-range standard. Thanks to its IP68 and IP69K certifications, the Xiaomi phone is not only protected against sand ingress but, according to TÜV testing, also survives immersion in water at a depth of up to two meters for up to 72 hours without damage. Its construction can withstand accidental drops onto hard surfaces such as granite from heights of up to three meters, while the front is protected by tough Gorilla Glass Victus 2 against scratches from grains of sand. Even the extreme heat that can build up when the phone is left in direct sunlight should be manageable for the modern silicon-carbon battery, thanks to its tested temperature resistance of up to 75 °C (manufacturer information).
Display brightness is also crucial for outdoor use. The 6.83-inch CrystalRes AMOLED display achieves one of the best results in our APL measurement in our review. We measure an impressive brightness of over 4,000 cd/m2. This makes screen content clearly visible with good contrast even in direct sunlight. Thanks to high-frequency PWM dimming, which reduces the flickering typical of OLED screens, the panel is unlikely to pose a problem even for sensitive users.
The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G's greatest strength for long days away from a power source is its battery life. Users can easily make intensive use of this mid-range smartphone for GPS navigation, playing music, and as a power bank for their smartwatch without having to worry about recharging on busy days. With a capacity of 8,340 mAh, the well energy-efficient Xiaomi phone achieves an exceptionally good result in our battery test. Find out just how good it is in our review.
