The Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 4G is cheaper than its 5G counterpart and lasts even longer in the battery test. However, buyers have to make compromises in performance and features. We explain who can benefit from forgoing 5G.

Xiaomi offers the Redmi Note 17 in two variants that look almost identical. Both have a 6.99-inch AMOLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, a 50 MP main camera and a massive 7,700 mAh battery. Under the hood, however, there are significant differences.

The Redmi Note 17 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4, while the LTE version has to make do with the older Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 2. In our benchmarks, the 5G model consistently comes out ahead. It offers more headroom in both processor and graphics performance. It also features more modern cellular technology and Bluetooth 5.1 instead of 5.0. There are differences in RAM, too: The LTE version starts with just 4 GB of RAM, while the 5G model offers at least 6 GB. However, both come with 6 GB of RAM when equipped with 256 GB of storage.

The tables turn when it comes to battery life. Although both smartphones have identical battery capacities, the Redmi Note 17 4G lasts longer in our Wi-Fi test at 22 hours and 12 minutes. The 5G model (buy on Amazon) also achieves an excellent 21 hours and 8 minutes, but falls short by 64 minutes.

The LTE version also has an advantage in terms of price. Those who want more performance and 5G should opt for the model with those features. Those primarily looking for long battery life at the lowest possible price, however, are better served by the Redmi Note 17 4G.
