Indie games have always played an important role on Steam, but in 2025, they reached a whole new level. For those who may not know, indie games are usually made by small teams or even solo developers. They often work without big publishers and large budgets. Over the years, many indie games have become huge hits, and 2025 proved once again how powerful this part of the market has become.
According to a new report from Alinea Analytics, indie games accounted for 25% of Steam’s total revenue in 2025. Steam generated around $17.7 billion in revenue this year, which is already 15% higher than the $15.4 billion it made in 2024. Out of that total, roughly $4.5 billion came from indie games alone.
The report also highlights just how crowded Steam has become. Around 20,000 games were released on the platform in 2025. However, only about 300 of those games managed to earn more than $1 million. This shows how top-heavy the market is.
What is even more impressive is how much money the biggest indie releases made this year. The top five new indie games of 2025 generated over $500 million in combined revenue. Schedule I led the way with $151 million. R.E.P.O. followed closely with $147 million. PEAK earned $87 million, while Hollow Knight: Silksong brought in $75 million. Escape from Duckov was in the fifth spot with $53 million. Together, these five games alone made up about 3% of Steam’s total yearly revenue.
There were also many other successful indie games that performed very well. Titles like Rematch, Dispatch, RV There Yet?, and Megabonk also accounted for a significant portion of the total revenue.
