Team Cherry is updating Hollow Knight's graphics to Silksong's standard, and bringing Silksong a free expansion like Hollow Knight used to receive.

Team Cherry, developers of Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight: Silksong, have announced a pair of updates for their two smash-hit indie Metroidvania games. The Steam-crashing Silksong is receiving a free expansion called Sea of Sorrow, which is stated to have "new areas, bosses, tools, and more", akin to prior free Hollow Knight expansions. There are few details available about Sea of Sorrow beyond the fact that it's planned for a free 2026 release, before which gamers can expect some more details on the expansion.

Based on the positive reception of the original Hollow Knight's free expansions and both games as a whole, we're sure Silksong players will be happy to hear the news. There may be some mixed emotions, though, considering the self-admitted "steep difficulty" of Silksong is likely to be matched or even eclipsed by Sea of Sorrows. We doubt that expansion content will be any easier than the main game, but since the main game is already so difficult, players should be trained for a greater challenge by then.

For those who haven't worked their way up to Silksong yet or just have a deep affection for the original Hollow Knight, the original release isn't being neglected, either. A Hollow Knight Refresh Update has been announced, as well as a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition which will bring those improvements to Nintendo's latest and greatest as well. To prepare for the Switch 2 Edition of Hollow Knight, Team Cherry will be updating all the original versions of the game for current-gen platforms, "adding features and fixing bugs". PC users, in particular, can already enjoy these updates by opting into the "public-beta" branches on Steam or GOG.

Touted improvements include support for 16:10 and 21:9 (ultrawide) resolutions, dithering options to reduce color banding, and more. Besides detailing these updates, Team Cherry's update blog post also teases some upcoming Silksong minifigures to start shipping through Fangamer in Spring 2026.
