Humanoids flop in first real firefighting drill at World Robot Games

Robots can now dance, backflip, and even outrun humans, but such applications are sort of useless compared to putting out a fire instead of endangering real firefighters.
At the second World Humanoid Robot Games, the first outdoor firefighting and rescue event for humanoid robots, intended to build on last year's more controlled indoor setup. The 2026 challenge was staged inside an actual fire station, forcing robots to operate in conditions closer to real emergency work.
Each robot had 30 minutes to identify a randomly placed hazardous substance and report it via image recognition, locate and shut three randomly assigned valves, then find a fire extinguisher and use it to put out a real flame. Actual human firefighters were standing by in order to both light the fire and judge whether the extinguisher was used correctly.
In practice, it exposed how fragile robot perception and motor control still are once you leave a sandboxed demo or remote VR-assisted control. Rain, shifting outdoor light, and the surrounding fire station clutter apparently threw off vision systems and mechanical precision. Of the 12 teams competing on August 16, only three managed to complete every stage of the task.
The standout was a UniX AI robot that did finish within the time limit and required precision, yet its overall pace lagged way behind a human firefighter's, and it had to repeat hand alignment with the extinguisher trigger twice until it got it right.
While human firefighters proved way superior to humanoid robots, such competitions are still useful as failure data generators. The teams then go on to improve the robots’ perception, motion planning, and balance control with the goal to get the extinguisher and correct valve right the next World Humanoid Robot Games with training data from the August 16 outdoor firefighting event.
