Ugandan runner loses marathon world record to Chinese robot - specs comparison

Honor’s “Lightning” humanoid robot has delivered a striking performance at the 2026 Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half Marathon.
The autonomous machine completed the distance with a net time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds, surpassing Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo’s half-marathon world record of 57:20. For context, a half-marathon covers just over 21 kilometers, making the robot’s pace significantly faster than typical elite human efforts in the event.
Standing 169cm tall with legs measuring around 90-95 cm to mimic elite human runners, the Lightning features a self-developed integrated joint module capable of a peak torque equal to the output of a high-performance car engine, along with high-dynamic motion control, real-time perception, and autonomous decision-making powered by Honor’s AI advancements. Meanwhile, Jacob Kiplimo has a set of lower limbs, and lungs - used for air intake and thermoregulation.
The Lightning also incorporates liquid-cooling technology, helping it maintain consistent performance without overheating. Swinging its short forearms for balance, the robot crossed the finish line with consistent speed and no visible fatigue - though it reportedly needed a quick assist after brushing a railing near the end.
Honor Lighting robot gave an emotional speech seconds after beating human to set new half-marathon record
There are rumors swirling around that Honor's D1 series of runner robots will offer optional “motivational trash-talk” in future updates. That said, unlike human runners who might immediately add the achievement to their Instagram bio, the robot didn’t feel the need to brag about completing the half marathon.
When asked to give a winning speech, in a real interview that nobody has access to, the honorsapiens reacted with the words: "blip-blop… khhh… bzzzzt… whirrr… 101001… beep-boop-bloop", which (from Mandarin) roughly translates to: blip-blop… khhh… bzzzzt… whirrr… 101001… beep-boop-bloop".
Finally, lightning dedicated its trophy to some of its famous cousins, including Optimus, Sophia, R2-D2, Mark Z, and the Terminator.
