One year after being launched in China, Huawei Pay is still exclusively available in that market, but a recently discovered patent application reveals that this mobile payment service is heading for the US market.

The list of mobile payment services present in the US is quite long, but Huawei Pay still has to join this market. Right now, this service that was introduced by the leading Chinese brand back in 2016 is only present in its home market. Less than a month ago, we heard that Huawei filed for a Huawei Pay-related trademark in Europe, this action suggesting that the company intends to launch this mobile payment service in the area. Now, we hear that they are taking the same steps in the US.

According to the official website of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Huawei recently filed a patent application that has been accepted already, but it still needs to be examined. The official patent page reveals that the USPTO will assign an examining attorney about 3 months after the filing date. Since the filing date is September 13, there is a chance to see Huawei Pay going live in the US by the end of the year. However, we think it is more likely for the service to launch in the area during the first months of 2018.

Although Huawei Pay could be unleashed in the US all by itself, it would be a smarter choice to launch it alongside a product like the upcoming Huawei Mate 10 flagship. Based on the local launch of the Huawei Mate 9, the Mate 10 should arrive in early 2018.

Huawei is now the second-largest smartphone maker in the world and needs to go much higher to finally grab the crown from Samsung. Huawei Pay's success in the US is only one of the many smaller goals that the Chinese brand needs to accomplish to reach the top. The US mobile payment service market is currently dominated by Apple Pay, but nothing lasts forever.
