Reviews for the Huawei Mate X6
Huawei's Mate X6 is a true premium foldable that seeks to impress with its cameras, durability and design. Our review will reveal whether this is enough to make up for its missing integration of Google services and 5G.
Source: Hardware Zone

On its own, the Huawei Mate X6 is an impressive foldable phone. It has one of the slimmest designs around and sports an excellent camera system. It also has features we have come to expect from foldables released in recent months: water resistance and wireless charging. Using a Huawei phone means accepting its long-standing challenges around limited app selection. It's already understood that the phone is not recommended for the average Singaporean consumer. However, besides the general incompatibility with Google apps, another catch exists.

Huawei Mate X6 is a great foldable smartphone from a Chinese manufacturer. Unfortunately, it lacks 5G network support and Google services to be called the best foldable. Statistics are unfortunately inexorable, and users want both. The biggest advantages of the device are the flagship photographic possibilities with innovative increase in depth of field in macro photos, IPX6 resistance class, which should not encourage bravado, but rather provide an additional chance for the device to be insensitive to flooding. Very good hinge mechanism, good comfort of use and the feeling that you are holding a premium device in your hand. Huawei has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of power supply and charging compared to the competition. Performance at the level of flagship smartphones is a certainty for me considering the price of the smartphone.

The Huawei Mate X6 is an amazing piece of hardware. It looks stunning, feels premium and has one of the best hinges in the business. Its cameras are impressive too, with natural colour tuning and exceptional macro capabilities. Unfortunately, the experience is soured by the lack of Google services. Yes, there are plenty of workarounds, but they’re not flawless, and it’s a headache you don’t have to endure elsewhere. Then, there’s the price. This phone costs as much as the impressive Honor Magic V3 and more than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 6. It’s hard to justify such a cost when you’re in for a less-than-perfect experience.

The Huawei Mate X6 is expected to retail for over €1999, which is quite a hefty sum for a phone with no 5G and offers mid-range gaming performance. But it is an impressively thin and premium design, with large and bright screens and flagship-grade multi-purpose cameras. In fact, the most interesting aspect of the Huawei Mate X6 are its cameras, both rear and selfies, and we found them offering excellent photo quality at all times. The telemacro capabilities of the zoom camera are particularly impressive, and the consistency of the photo processing across all cameras is commendable. We were not thrilled by the video quality, though the video stabilization works incredibly well. Yes, the Mate X6 packs the screens to impress, the speakers are nice, the charging is fast, and the cameras did very good.

Ultimately, the Huawei Mate X6 is an excellent piece of hardware that’s greatly held back by its software, which like every Huawei smartphones after the US sanctions, it remains questionable on how committed Huawei is to the phone’s future software development, even if you don’t care about 5G, paying RM8,688 for this foldable just doesn’t make sense even for the filthy rich, the only reason that you probably want to get the Huawei Mate X6 is its cameras which you can’t get on other foldable phones.

With so many options available now, what's a good foldable smartphone to grab this Christmas season? Well, HUAWEI could have the one for you. Among them is the new HUAWEI Mate X6, a foldable smartphone with plenty to offer. Here are some of the key advantages we want to highlight.

The Huawei Mate X6 redefines foldable smartphone expectations with its innovative features and polished user experience. Integrating advancements like a refined hinge mechanism and enhanced camera capabilities delivers a uniquely versatile device that addresses the demands of everyday users and technology enthusiasts. Its impeccable design, advanced materials, and versatile camera system make it a striking device for those seeking style and substance. Features like the variable aperture, waterdrop hinge, and basalt body architecture demonstrate Huawei’s ability to push the boundaries of innovation. Considering everything, I can’t help but be extremely pleased with the Mate X6. It ticks nearly all the boxes and exceeds my expectations, which is why I’m awarding it the Yanko Design Editor Choice.

The Huawei Mate X6 is not just a great foldable phone but a great phone, full stop. However, there are some caveats to this statement. The phone comes with the prerequisite of living without (or sideloading) Google Mobile Services and also not paying attention to synthetic benchmarks (as the chipset inside lacks raw power). Getting this phone in the US is pretty hard, and you have to be really committed to be able to import one, and then there's the price. The base model retails in Europe for 1,999 euros pounds, and that's anything but cheap. But if you're able to live with all those things listed above, you're gonna get one of the thinnest, most stylish, and camera-capable foldables out there.

Looking back at today's folding screen market, we can see that among the folding flagships, Huawei Mate X series has always been the most reliable and attractive folding flagship for users to choose. After the development of domestic flagships in the past few years, it is not difficult to realize that the victory of the parameters is certainly important, but the user always buys the experience - Huawei Mate X6 is precisely a product under this “experience first” idea.

The Huawei Mate X6 arrives fashionably late to the foldable phone party but makes a bold entrance. Launched at the tail end of 2024 and hitting users’ hands in early 2025, this flagship foldable promises premium design, solid performance, and a versatile camera system. However, for all its hardware achievements, a few key compromises still hold it back. Available in vegan leather or composite fibre finishes, the Mate X6 feels as luxurious as it looks. At 239g, it is lightweight for a foldable, and with a slim frame and second-gen Kunlun Glass, it is built to endure daily wear. The phone's hinge is a standout, rivalling even Samsung’s for stability across angles. The device feels secure when open or closed, and an included half-case with a kickstand adds functionality and protection. With a 6.45-inch outer OLED screen and a 7.94-inch inner OLED display, both running at 120Hz, the Mate X6 offers a spacious, immersive viewing experience. The outer display hits 2500 nits of brightness, while the inner reaches 1800 nits, both vivid and crisp. Huawei also includes advanced eye care features like 1440Hz PWM dimming and ultra-low brightness for night-time use. Despite its slim profile, the Mate X6 packs a 5110mAh battery, offering solid all-day use. It supports 66W wired and 50W wireless charging, outpacing many rivals. While it doesn’t set new battery life records, charging is quick and efficient, getting you from 0 to 100% in under 45 minutes with the included wired charger.
Due to U.S. sanctions, Huawei leans on its in-house Kirin 9020 chip, which cannot match the latest Snapdragon or Dimensity processors on benchmarks. Yet, Huawei’s software optimizations shine, making everyday use feel fast and fluid. Apps launch quickly, multitasking is smooth and even demanding games like Genshin Impact run respectably with minimal heat buildup. However, there is no 5G support and no Google services with the latter being a major drawback for many users. Huawei fits the Mate X6 with a versatile triple camera system which includes a 50MP main sensor with adjustable aperture, a 48MP 4x telephoto with macro, and a 40MP ultrawide. The adjustable aperture allows for better control of depth and low-light shots, while the telephoto lens excels in macro photography, aided by Huawei’s new eDOF tech for enhanced focus stacking. Selfies are handled by 8MP cameras on both screens which is adequate, but not standout. Huawei’s natural image processing remains a strong point, offering lifelike colours and reliable low-light and action shots. Still, sensor sizes are smaller than competitors’, which may limit extreme dynamic range or depth. The Huawei Mate X6 delivers some of the best hardware in a foldable phone today, with its refined design, smooth displays, long battery life, and impressive camera flexibility. Yet, it is held back by a lack of Google services, no 5G, and a high price tag. For hardware lovers, it is a dream device. For the average user, the compromises might outweigh the rewards.
