Huawei Mate X6 review - The spearhead of foldables with Google if desired and good cameras?

Premium foldable.

Huawei's Mate X6 is a true premium foldable that seeks to impress with its cameras, durability and design. Our review will reveal whether this is enough to make up for its missing integration of Google services and 5G.

Verdict - The Huawei Mate X6 fights partly successfully against restrictions

The Huawei Mate X6 continues to suffer as a result of trade restrictions, having to do without modern 5G and Google Mobile Services (GMS), among other things. Processors from Qualcomm are also taboo, but Huawei compensates for this well in the shape of its own Kirin SoC—at least when it comes to CPU and system performance. However, this also means that the widespread aptX codecs aren't on board either. More modern Wi-Fi and eSIM support would also have been nice to see.

On the plus side, it features a slim design with a good camera setup. If you don't want to do without your Google apps, there are ways to get them onto your Mate X6 via a short detour, which now works well without having to install APKs from insecure sources.

Its price is certainly also an issue. Although it is on par with the competition from Google and Samsung, the slightly better-equipped Magic V3 is significantly cheaper.

Pros

+ slim design
+ good camera setup
+ long runtimes
+ waterproof
+ fast charging with and without a cable

Cons

- short update period
- neither 5G nor 6 GHz WLAN
- slow USB port
- no eSIM support

Price and availability

The Huawei Mate X6 isn't available to purchase in the United States for the time being. You may be able to buy it as an import device from certain retailers.

After the Mate X5 didn't make it to Germany (where this test was carried out), Huawei has corrected its product policy and the Mate X6 is now available there, too. It is powered by the company's own Kirin 9020, which has plenty of memory. The phone's design is slim and reminiscent of the Magic V3.

With an MRSP of just over $2,000, the Mate X6 is certainly not a bargain, but you can find out whether it is still worthy of our recommendation and whether it can compensate for its lack of Google services and 5G in our review.

Case & connectivity - The Mate X6 with IPX8 and Kunlun Glass 2

When folded shut, the Huawei Mate X6 isn't even 10 mm thick and doesn't appear any larger than a conventional smartphone. When unfolded, it is super thin—only the camera hump is very thick—but without the foldable becoming top-heavy. Its build quality is great and the crease along its screen isn't too pronounced. Its opening angle can also be adjusted very flexibly.

The Mate X6 is IPX8 waterproof and the front is protected by 2nd generation Kunlun glass, which shouldn't be affected by drops from a height of 1.2 meters. The back of our black test device is made of artificial leather, which is quite resistant to dirt and provides a non-slip feel.

Unfortunately, Huawei hasn't provided any precise details about the phone's USB port. In any case, it supports wired image output, including an optional desktop mode. However, the interface was very slow during the copying test, which is more indicative of USB 2.0.

The rest of its connectivity is impressive. In addition to an IR blaster, which can be used to control home entertainment, air conditioners etc., the Mate X6 also supports a stylus. Sadly, however, you can't purchase one outside of China.

Communication and operation - Neither 5G nor Wi-Fi 7 on the Huawei Mate X6

The Huawei Mate X6 appears to be a little old-fashioned when it comes to its communication module. This is due to trade restrictions—but that doesn't change the fact. The Huawei foldable only supports Wi-Fi 6, i.e. neither modern Wi-Fi 7 nor the powerful 6 GHz band. In combination with our reference router, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000, its reception performance temporarily weakened, but this shouldn't be noticeable during everyday use.

At best, the Mate X6 can access the mobile data network using LTE; it doesn't support fast 5G. Even so, Huawei emphasizes the good reception characteristics of its smartphone, which we can actually confirm in everyday use: On a press trip, we had no reception in our hotel room with either an iPhone or the Magic7 Pro but using the Mate X6, it was no problem.

The Huawei smartphone is just as impressive when it comes to its telephone features, delivering natural voice quality and good noise suppression.

A capacitive fingerprint sensor inside the power button can be used for biometric security, and it boasts high recognition rates and a good speed. Alternatively or additionally, less secure facial recognition is possible via the front cameras.

A linear vibration motor provides crisp haptic feedback and the two capacitive touchscreens allow fast and precise inputs.

Software and sustainability - The Mate X6 will only receive updates for 3 years

The Huawei Mate X6 comes with EMUI 15, which is based on open-source Android 12. Anyone who has ever owned a Huawei or Honor smartphone will have no trouble finding their way around. Its update support is short: Only two major EMUI updates and three years of security patches have been promised by the manufacturer.

This Huawei smartphone also comes without pre-installed services and apps from Google. If the AppGallery is not enough for you, you can install the Aurora Store, which gives you full access to the Google Play Store. We have explained exactly how this works in a separate article, so almost all software restrictions can be bypassed, except for Google Pay.

Huawei has kept a low profile when it comes to the topic of sustainability. The company hasn't provided any information on the foldable's CO2e footprint or its use of recycled materials—not to mention a sustainability report. The outer packaging of the Mate X6 is made of cardboard, and no plastic is used for the other packaging materials either. One downside, however, is that the rather large cardboard box is completely shrink-wrapped.

Cameras - Versatile setup on the Mate X6

Main camera

The Huawei Mate X6's two front cameras both only work using 8 MPix, but with an aperture of f/2.2, the lens in the foldable display is slightly brighter than the one on the front (f/2.4). But their quality is still good. Even so, you can take better selfies on the phone's main camera, which optionally uses the cover display as a viewfinder.

The main lens has a variable aperture (f/1.4 - f/4.0), which is automatically adjusted to the lighting conditions. However, it can also be used manually in nine steps. The resulting photos look good, but the depth of field could be a little better in some situations. The camera also depicts a fairly high contrast with close-up subjects. It does well in low light and delivers really good results with comparatively short exposure times. Another positive aspect is its color reproduction, which looks quite natural.

The device's camera setup is complemented by a high-resolution ultra-wide-angle lens, which unfortunately shows a clear loss of sharpness toward the edges of the photo. It also features a 4x optical periscope zoom, which allows a maximum magnification of 100x and also serves as a macro lens. You can expect good results up to a magnification of ten times, above which the quality drops visibly.

All lenses of the main setup can record videos at 4k/60fps. The image stabilization works well. 4K/30 FPS is possible using the front cameras.

Foldable display - Eye-friendly LTPO panel in the Huawei foldable

Sub-pixel array
Sub-pixel array

The foldable OLED display inside the Huawei Mate X6 works using a dynamic refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz. Its brightness is good with an average of 1,179 cd/m² and is completely sufficient in most lighting situations; those who like to adjust the brightness manually will have to make do with 653 cd/m². Still, the Huawei foldable can't quite reach the peak brightness values of a Galaxy Z Fold6 or the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

We measured a base frequency of around 360 Hz using an oscilloscope. However, due to its high-frequency PWM dimming and the flat amplitude, this should cause very few complaints from users.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 360 Hz
Amplitude: 15.16 %
Secondary Frequency: 1428 Hz

The display backlight flickers at 360 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) .

The frequency of 360 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8627 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

The Mate X6's external display already proved to be significantly brighter than its foldable counterpart in the measurements with a full-surface white display, reaching 1,658 cd/m² in the center of the screen; without an ambient light sensor, you can expect up to 635 cd/m².

The display also boasts a significantly higher peak brightness, which applies to both the reduced white area test (APL18: 2,672 cd/m²) and the HDR measurement (2,759 cd/m²).

Its color reproduction is on par with the foldable panel and is very accurate. Huawei also makes no compromises when it comes to PWM dimming and uses the same technology on this screen.

Performance, emissions and battery life

The Huawei Mate X6 is powered by the in-house Kirin 9020, which has access to 12 GB of RAM. Its pure CPU performance is really good, ensuring smooth operation and multitasking during everyday use. In the Geekbench multi-core test, for which twelve cores were available, the SoC even outperformed the Tensor G4.

Although the integrated Maleoon 920 graphics unit clocks slightly higher than its predecessor, it still doesn't support ray tracing. In the benchmarks, it brought up the rear by a considerable margin in the comparison field. The same applied to its AI performance.

Even though Huawei hasn't provided any precise information on its internal storage, it appears to be a fast UFS 4.0 type, whose performance was beyond any doubt in the benchmarks.

The phone's surface temperatures remained at a safe level at all times during our test. However, the SoC's performance dropped noticeably under load.

Its speakers deliver a nice sound, even if the low tones are barely present—which is why they seem discordant at full volume.

During our Wi-Fi test, the device's runtimes were almost 13 hours—a good result, but the competition invariably lasted longer. You can charge the Mate X6 wirelessly at up to 50 watts, and even at up to 66 watts using a cable. With the latter, a full charge took 52 minutes in our test (50%: 16 min, 80%: 30 min).
