Released in 1999, The Matrix is a film that has left its mark on many generations. Given its huge success, there were numerous rumors circulating about a potential game inspired by this film, with some even mentioning Hideo Kojima as the director of the project.
It must be said that at this time, Kojima was working on Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and his work was already impressive. As a result, the Wachowski sisters decided to meet him, but this meeting reportedly ended with a simple refusal from Hideo Kojima.
But recently, Konami's former vice president, Christopher Bergstresser, gave Time Extension other reasons why the project never saw the light of day. According to him, Kazumi Kitaue, executive manager at Konami, put an end to all discussions so that Hideo Kojima could focus on Metal Gear Solid:
"The Wachowskis were big fans of Kojima. So Kazumi Kitaue, Kojima, Aki Saito (who still works with Kojima), and I were at the Konami HQ, and we got a call from the Wachowskis, who wanted to come in and meet with Kojima. So they did!"
The Wachowski sisters reportedly asked him to make a Matrix game, to which Kazumi Kitaue simply replied in the negative. And while this may disappoint some fans, we must not forget that Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and The Matrix share some similarities.
Thus, it would have been difficult to find a unique identity for each game, even though the universe is different. And that could also have disappointed many fans of the franchise.
