A group of passionate fans have announced a new mod for Bully that takes Rockstar's 2006 open-world classic online. The dedicated online mode promises a suite of features, allowing "you and your friends to play minigames, roleplay, compete in racing, fend off against NPCs, and much more!"
It will also provide access to dedicated online servers and an inventory system that will let players trade in-game. Players will be able to earn money by doing various objectives and minigames, which they can spend on houses, vehicles, weapons, and various other items.
There is a catch to this. Bully Online will first release in early access in December 2025 and will be limited to the mod's paid Ko-Fi supporters. Players who support the project will earn special behind-the-scenes features, Discord access, a special nametag, server priority, and a special in-game digital camera.
According to one of the creators, SWEGTA, the release, "is supposed to be a preview for all of you people who have been waiting sooo long for this mod to be released! This also means that nearly everything is subject to inevitable change, this also includes our scripting API. While the current release is in no way near finished, it should be stable enough for you to have some fun with. Unstable, but fun nonetheless."
The community's reaction
The community's reaction has been mixed. While some are happy, others have rightfully pointed out Rockstar's history of taking down fan mods, such as the Liberty City Preservation Project that aimed to recreate GTA 4 in GTA 5's engine.
As a Reddit comment on the official Bully Online thread points out, "It's all fun and games until Rockstar pulls a Nintendo and take this game down despite the fact that they BARELY do anything with the Bully ip."
Another sore point is the initial paywall for Early Access.
Interestingly, it was recently revealed that plans for Bully 2 were scrapped due to "bandwidth issues."
