Halo: Combat Evolved now playable with web browser for free

Halo: Combat Evolved can now be played for free via web browser, giving PC users access to the original Xbox shooter's full campaign without having to install the game traditionally. The fan-made project was created by developer Mitchell Hynes and runs directly in a browser, with early testing indicating that the campaign is playable, although performance can be somewhat uneven.

The browser port also includes split-screen co-op and online multiplayer supporting up to 128 players. However, the 128-player functionality remains untested by its creator, meaning its reliability has not yet been established. Hynes has also warned that the browser version does not work particularly well on iOS and Android, making PC the recommended platform.

The project follows the recent decompilation of Halo: Combat Evolved, which has enabled a range of ports and technical experiments. While the browser version provides an unusual way to revisit the classic shooter, it is unofficial and may potentially be removed. Players seeking an official release can instead purchase Halo: The Master Chief Collection via Xbox or Steam.
