It's not the most powerful gaming laptop out there, nor the slimmest one, but it's among the best combinations of price, screen size and performance.

The 2017 version of the HP Omen 17-inch gaming laptop is a small but welcome update from last year’s model. It still has some room to grow, with “just okay” audio and a “just okay” touchpad, along with a rather pedestrian aesthetic. But at least it’s not nearly as plain-looking as last year’s boring black slab, and some of the annoyances, like the lack of Thunderbolt 3, have been corrected. The newer Intel processors come standard, but those don’t really make a huge difference in performance.

Now that's what I'm talking about! After several iterations of Omens with handsome but safe designs and mid-level specs, HP is throwing caution to the wind. The $1,899 HP Omen 17 boasts an avant-garde design that's a definite conversation starter. But beyond the new look lies a vivid 4K display, blistering-fast SSD, Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia GTX 1070 GPU, making this a bona fide gaming and multitasking powerhouse.

The new HP Omen 17 is still good for gaming, but the high price tag and minimal improvements over its predecessor make it a questionable buy.

HP Omen 17-an009tx
With the proliferation of gaming laptops by companies like Asus, Lenovo, MSI and more, HP has had to raise its game, too, in the past few months. The company released its new range of Omen-branded gaming laptops in February this year and has since then launched several iterations, among others another beefy gaming laptop, the new Omen 17 (17-AN009TX). The Omen 17 builds on the same design that HP has been carrying ever since the introduction of its dedicated gaming series. Being a gaming laptop, it is bound to be heavy and bulky. The laptop weighs 3.7kg, which is on the heavier side when it comes to gaming laptops. However, bulk and brawn are attributes that are associated with most gaming laptops as some even come with dedicated suitcases. The screen is a 17.3-inch anti-glare WLED-backlit Full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) display, it is sufficiently saturated and has that required punch while playing heavy games. The exhausts are placed strategically right at the screen hinge area, facing outwards. Exhaust grilles are also there on the underside. The two speakers can be found under the laptop alongside the rubber lids. The backlit full-size island-style keyboard, as already seen on other laptops of the Omen family, stayed the same. The traveling time of the keys is slightly more than what is found in traditional laptops. This will not take much time to get used to if a user is coming from a regular laptop. Gamers, however, may love it given that they use it in a rougher manner than others.
The new gaming laptop packs one of the most powerful processors under the hood, the 7th-generation Intel ‘Kaby Lake’ Core i7 processor. The notebook also boasts the Nvidia GTX 1070 GPU, which has 8GB of DDR5 RAM of its own. In general, the device can support up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 1TB hard drive (7200rpm) and a 256GB SSD. Video chatting is also good on the Omen 17. It has a TrueVision Full-HD webcam coupled with microphones in case users do not have headphones at hand. As far as the operating system is concerned, Windows 10 performs just about fine. It comes with its own native features, including Windows Hello security technology. Users get some of HP’s native apps in the mix, such as HP 3D DriveGuard, Audio Switch, Documentation, ePrint, JumpStart, Orbit, Recovery Manager and more, to customize the gaming device further. On both sides of the body, there is a bunch of connectivity options, which pretty much fulfill the needs of a typical gamer. Users also get a USB 3.1 Type-C port, 3 USB 3.1 Gen-1 ports, 1 HDMI port, a headphone jack, a multi-format SD-card reader, and a Mini DisplayPort alongside the usual Bluetooth v4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac combo.

HP Omen 17 has one of the best gaming device with top-tier specifications you will find in any laptop. However, it is also not the only one in the given price segment. Even with those heavy specs, it is likely to witness a good amount of competition coming from rivals such as Dell, MSI, Acer and more.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile: Mainstream graphics card based on Nvidia's Pascal architecture and successor to the GeForce GTX 965M. Is manufactured in a 14nm process at Samsung and the technical specifications are very similar to the desktop version.
