HP's Envy Spectre XT on the whole is a good overall ultrabook but the problem is that it doesn't really stand out in a very crowded market especially with the Premium Envy name. Performance is good and the build quality is better than average. HP does manage to include dual band Wi-Fi and a gigabit Ethernet for networking which is nice at this price point but not unusual.

So is the HP ENVY Spectre XT 13 a good fit for a student laptop solution? If you use the HP Academic discount the price starts at $979.99 and you can get a Free XBox 360, which is kind of a nice deal and really sweetens the offer. To be honest, I kind of prefer the Envy 4t-1000 we just reviewed as a student laptop because it’s got a better starting price of $683.99 and is very well built and attractive and you can also get the free XBox 360 with it. It’s not as thin and light as the Spectre XT 13 though.

The cat's meow. With the sleek 13.3-inch Envy Spectre XT 13-2000eg, HP expands its ultrabook portfolio. Featuring an aluminum case, the latest hardware, a Beats Audio system, and a backlit keyboard, does this ultrabook offer substance in addition to its style?

If you want a PC that resembles a MacBook Air, the HP Spectre XT is just the ticket. It actually sounds better and while the trackpad failing is disappointing, this feels like a luxurious PC out of the box. The biggest issue is that a 13-inch MacBook Air costs around £149 more with an identical spec but better build and that all important OS X Mountain Lion. If you're resolutely a PC person, however, this is an affordable and stylish ultrabook that sits at the top of the pack for style and value.

The Spectre XT is quite a capable Ultrabook, and certainly does exude that ‘pick me up and caress me’ feeling. Having said that, it unfortunately doesn’t wow with its screen, which should have been much better to keep up with the overall premium look and feel of the XT. Battery life on the XT is also up for debate – with consumers spending more time on the go, you’d not want to be caught out trying to get something important done when your laptop dies on you. Still, the Spectre XT does have some very desirable qualities like a much sought-after keyboard and trackpad, which is often overlooked in other Ultrabooks. If you’re willing to overlook the screen quality and the sometimes-annoying power connector that’s jostling for extra space, then pick up and enjoy the Spectre XT.

The HP Spectre XT is a decent Ultrabook. It’s pretty light and is very attractive. In terms of performance, it isn’t sluggish and the battery life is pretty impressive. Priced at Rs 64,990 in India, it’s not the most affordable Ultrabook out there, but is surely worth its price if you’re travelling a lot and need a portable notebook as company.

The HP Spectre XT is a new ultrabook that feels oddly familiar. Its slender wedge shape and metal build is not only reminiscent of the Apple Macbook Air, it is also very similar to HP's own Envy 6. Preinstalled on the SSD are copies of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and Premiere Elements 10 for editing photos and video, respectively.

I know that some of things in this review sound pretty negative, but the HP ENVY Spectre XT is actually a pretty solid ultrabook. The battery is disappointing and the speakers, despite sporting Beats Audio branding, aren’t anything to write home about, but other than that, the Spectre XT is capable of running with the best of them (ultrabooks, that is).

There’s some room for improvement on battery life, but the more I used it the more I found myself liking the Spectre XT. It’s slim, light, fast, and – by Ultrabook standards – competitively priced. If I were HP I’d quit now while I was ahead and forget about the touch-screen gubbins they’re already talking about for the next model.

The HP Envy Spectre XT is a slick Ultrabook with plenty of power and strong Beats Audio. We like the fast SSD, accurate clickpad, good battery life, and cool-running temperatures. What holds this system back from a higher rating is the ho-hum 1366 x 768 screen. In this price range we give the edge to the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A because it packs a higher quality full HD screen with much wider viewing angles for just $50 more

The Envy Spectre XT is a good Ultrabook on its own, and an even better one when you consider how HP improved upon the already-appealing Envy 14 Spectre. A refined, responsive touchpad, even brisker performance and a more palatable price make this a prime contender for the contents of your wallet. Unimpressive battery life and weak audio dampen our enthusiasm slightly, but ultimately the XT is one of the best Ultrabooks available right now.

HP's Envy Spectre XT looks and feels almost like a premium Ultrabook -- it's small, light and easy to carry on a daily basis. It's quite a noisy unit though and it could use a much better (and less glossy screen). We love its keyboard though, as well as its very fast SSD and the fact that it includes dual-band Wi-Fi. If you don't mind fan noise and can put up with reflections, then go for it.

The Spectre XT may not be the very best ultrabook we've reviewed, but it's one of the better systems, especially among ultrabooks selling for under $1,000. Performance gets a boost from a zippy solid-state drive, while battery life and display are only so-so. The Toshiba Portege Z935-P300 remains our Editors' Choice, offering a similar combination of features and performance for less, but the Spectre XT will likely win some hearts with its handsome design and solid performance.

The ultrabook market is bubbling like a cauldron, with a slew of affordable hard drive-based (rather than SSD-based) models now on sale; a few high-end options to tempt well-to-do executives; and a crop of touch-screened (and hence a bit heavier and thicker) Windows 8 ultrabooks due to arrive along with Microsoft's new OS this fall.

As the current flagship of HP's laptop line, the new Envy Spectre XT certainly packs a lot of names into one product. This is a premium ultrabook, and our understanding is that the Spectre designation now indicates a level of product above HP's already high-end Envy line. A high-end laptop at a mainstream price, the HP Envy Spectre XT gets much of the look and feel right, with only a few missteps.

Though we gave the HP Envy Spectre XT a bit of a hard time for not bringing anything new to the table, it's still a very strong Ultrabook that's good looking and well made. The metal casing gives it a premium look and the internals don't skimp: fast SSD drives, dual band Intel wireless with WiDi and Bluetooth 4.0 are top notch. The display is better than average for clarity and viewing angles, though the resolution is commonplace.

Value for money. The Envy 13 from HP is a fresh candidate for the subnotebook crown. We can say this upfront: It cannot quite keep up with the current leaders like the Dell XPS 13 and Apple MacBook in respect to the performance. But it does not have to – because our review unit convinces in another section: It is rare that you get a 13-inch system with so many pixels for the money.
HP Envy 13-d020ng
The HP Envy series is one of the most beautifully designed laptops. The silver laptop is so slick and thin that it can be mistaken for an Apple MacBook Air. The computer has a beautiful 13.3 inch display and a Full HD display (1080p). This is more of a computer for business travellers and professionals, but it can run games on lower settings. The computer doesn't have an optical drive, but it comes with three USB ports and an SD card reader. A key feature of this laptop is the fingerprint sensor, which HP incorporates in all of its new higher-end models for extra security. The Windows 10 system is very light at 1.36 kg. Thus, it can be easily used on the move. It also has an HDMI output for connecting an external display. The Envy comes with an Intel i5 processor and the integrated Intel graphics chip, which provides crystal clear video playback. In addition, the computer features 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB hard drive. The battery life is up to 10 hours. However, during heavy use it lasts an average of 3-4 hours.Specifications

Appealing. With the Envy 13, HP delivers a stylish subnotebook. The inner values are also okay: powerful processor, good battery runtimes, fast SSD, and a matte IPS Full HD display.

The HP Envy 13t-d000 is really thin and very light, and it offers a vivid display and impressive B&O speakers. But the Envy's battery life, at just 5:48, is downright paltry. Other ultraportables last almost twice as long. Add in a relatively slow SSD and an unattractive bezel, and you'll want to look at other laptops.

Overall, though, the HP Envy 13 is a bit of a mixed bag. Its design is great to look at, but it doesn’t necessarily hold up so well under closer scrutiny, especially when you put your hands on it. I found the keyboard, in particular, disappointing to use for prolonged periods, and its performance is also hindered by its chassis compared to similarly-specified laptops.

The HP Envy 13 gets a lot of things right. The design, the trackpad, the performance and the screen are all very good. Using this laptop is a real delight in most respects, its physical portability is fantastic and it has clearly been designed with a sensible budget in mind. It’s a good buy. There are a few issues, though. Unless use is very light, battery life is disappointing and the build quality is slightly less impressive than it at first appears – there’s some flex to the body, making it a bit less luxurious than you might expect looking at photos. Given the excellent combination of features, performance and value though, it’s only the battery life you need to really stop and think about before buying. The Asus UX305 lasts longer, and while that laptop lacks a backlit keyboard and some of the HP’s raw power, that might be enough to justify switching teams.

We wanted to love HP's thinnest laptop. It has all the hallmarks of greatness, almost MacBook Air physical specs, and a consistently well-performing new CPU. If you're looking for something that's light and portable with processor oomph coupled with an FHD screen then the Envy might just be for you. However, if you're moving from office to office or study to study without the chance of a recharge you might find yourself short-changed power-wise.

There are some deficiencies to the Envy 13, in particular its display, but it does offer good value to consumers looking for a well-designed laptop in the $800 to $1,000 laptop market. The fact you can get a Core i5 CPU with a QHD+ display for just $849 is particularly compelling, and models around that price point are the sweet spot for HP’s ultrathin laptop.

HP Envy 13-ab016nr
The powerful features and the stunning design on the new HP Envy leave one with much to envy. For starters, it comes in a sleek and smooth all-metal body which makes this a fancy notebook to tote about. HP chooses to retain its simplistic yet sophisticated look with the front panel emblazoned with its stylish redesigned logo. The dimensions of the Envy measure at 32,59 x 22.61 x 1.4 cm (12.83 x 8.9 x 0.55 inch ) and it weighs merely 1.43 kg (3.15 lb). This makes the Envy an ideal on-the-go option for those who seek longer productivity. What boosts the performance of this laptop is the 7th generation Intel Core i5 processor with a base clock of 2.5 GHz and a Turbo clock of up to 3.1 GHz and 8 GB of RAM. This fulfills the needs of most multitasking demands and enables new ways to network with the Envy. It also comes with a 256 GB M.2 Solid State Drive, which provides up to 17 times faster performance than a conventional hard drive. One remarkable feature of the Envy is its brilliant 13.3 inch diagonal Full HD UWVA eDP BrightView WLED-backlit display. The display is coated with scratch-resistant glass (possibly Gorilla Glass) thus giving a durable edge-to-edge glass display, something like what Dell offers in its XPS 13 series. Its stunning visuals are complemented by a rich audio experience on with its dual speakers, which is enhanced with HP Audio Boost, and expert tuning by Bang & Olufsen for audio perfection on the Envy. Sound produced by its speakers is clear and crisp.
If there is one flaw in the previous generation which is addressed in this current model, it is the backlighting on its full-size island-style keyboard. This allows for use even under low-light conditions and is essential in all laptops these days. Connectivity on this laptop consists of a USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 1 (data up to 5 Gb/s) port, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, an HDMI port and a headphones-out/microphone-in combo jack. It seems that HP has opted to remove the conventional USB 2.0 port, which is a huge welcome. The inclusion of USB 2.0 ports on newer laptops doesn't make sense anymore especially since most newer ports are backward compatible. Furthermore, one of the ports is fitted with HP Sleep and Charge, which allows charging of smartphones, tablets, and other devices from the laptop even when it is asleep or hibernating. The Envy also comes with an HP TrueVision HD camera, which makes video chats with clarity possible, even in low light. Its microphones are powered up with Cortana, the personal assistant on Windows, which simplifies tasking on this laptop. Last but not least, its battery life of up to 14 hours makes the Envy an even more desirable option. The HP Envy series has always been about a perfect balance between performance, style, quality and price. The HP Envy 13-ab016n keeps to this same formula and is a serious competition to its main competitor, the Dell Inspiron series.

HP ENVY 13-ab016nr is not too expensive an unit, but it surely offers performance of one! The engine room is darn solid, nothing is really lacking in there when it comes to running software. Especially the PCIe based SSD is sweet. Also the display with Full HD resolution and top-notch viewing angles will be nice to look at and use for, say, image editing. The laptop will last forever (~10 hours) with the default battery. You’ll need to be careful with in-game settings, but otherwise this HP is close to a perfect snappy notebook if you ask me!

We’re mightily impressed with this entry-level ultraportable. Not only is it built well and looks great, the immaculate screen is even better than many machines twice the price. The HP XPS 13. The narrow bezel design from the flagship Spectre series has trickled down to the mainstream Envy series with fantastic results. Though not without some sacrifices, this is the best Envy notebook to date.

HP's compact Envy 13 is one of the few subnotebooks with a dedicated graphics card. The current model is equipped with the GeForce MX450, but is the GPU even worth it in view of the fast integrated graphics unit?

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3667U: Fastest Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 2.0 - 3.2 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

i5-7200U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.5 to 3.1 GHz, HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.
i7-7500U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.7 to 3.5 GHz, HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.
Intel Kaby Lake Refresh:
i5-8550U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,150 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.
Intel Tiger Lake:
i7-1165G7: An upper mid-range, quad-core processor of Tiger Lake product family. The i7 is designed for use in ultra-light (yet actively cooled) laptops; it is manufactured on Intel's third-gen 10 nm process marketed as SuperFin. The CPU cores run at 2.8 GHz (base clock speed @ 28 W TDP) to 4.7 GHz (single-core Boost frequency). This i7 features the 96 EU Intel Iris Xe G7 iGPU; it was the second-fastest CPU of TGL-UP3 line-up when Intel initially launched the series in 2020.

13.00:
There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
