Promoted to business class. A premium-range laptop for corporate customers that relies on a processor from AMD - we haven't seen that for quite a while now. HP sees its new EliteBook product line as an affordable alternative for the seemingly omnipotent Intel competition without affecting the quality standard. Will this experiment be successful?

Wasted potential. HP's new EliteBook 700 series, which is based on AMD quad-core APUs, promises a comparatively inexpensive entry into the world of high-quality business notebooks. What are the drawbacks of the 12.5-inch 725 G2 compared to its Intel-equipped competitors?

HP EliteBook 745 G3
Cost effective and robust, the HP EliteBook 745 G3 is a perfect work laptop that comes in a thin and light package. Design is kept simple with the top cover finished in a matte silver look. The silver theme is carried throughout the chassis and is highlighted with a black spill-resistant, chiclet-style keyboard. Security is a priority with the HP EliteBook 745 G3 as it comes with self-healing BIOS and HP Sure Start that protects from data attacks. Display on the laptop is a 14 inch HD SVA anti-glare LED-backlit panel with good brightness levels and clarity. The Windows 7 Professional 64 bit system comes equipped with an AMD Pro A8-8600B APU quad-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz, 4 GB of DDR3L 1600MHz RAM, an integrated Radeon R6 Graphics processor, and a 500 GB HDD. Audio quality is impressive with a premium stereo setup by Bang and Olufsen. Other features on the HP EliteBook 745 G3 are Bluetooth 4.0, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB Type-C port, a VGA out, a card reader, and a 720p HD webcam. The non-touchscreen variant weighs around 1.55 kg (3.41 lb) and either variant sports a 3-cell Li-Ion Polymer battery allowing for up to 7 hours of usage time.Specifications

Forget cheap. A high-end laptop based on AMD hardware - we have not seen that for quite some time. HP dares this experiment, and installs the fastest Carrizo APU alongside an SSD and a WQHD IPS panel in its EliteBook 745 G3. But just how well can the 1300 Euro (~$1404) machine stand up to the Intel competition?

Archive.org versionThe HP EliteBook 745 G3 is a competent business laptop, but it doesn't excel in any particular area. It's less expensive than much of its competition, but lagging performance and a subpar display aren't worth the relatively minor savings.

Archive.org versionThere's a lot to like about the EliteBook 745 G3, not least its $1,119 price with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. It's a good-looking, fairly light aluminum design. The keyboard is as good as any you'll find in the business laptop category, with a superb typing feel. We like the convenience of the mute, airplane mode, and microphone mute.

Archive.org versionThe HP EliteBook 745 is a lightweight, attractive business notebook with powerful speakers, but it falls short in several key areas. The performance is decent enough, but less than 6 hours of battery life, a dull screen and an uncomfortable keyboard make it a less-than-compelling choice.

Archive.org versionCompared to Apple's MacBook strategy, HP is taking a different approach with its EliteBook by offering performance at a lower cost. This makes the entry-level EliteBook 745 G3 an exceptional value for those who want Intel Core i5-level performance but don't want to pay the price for the mainstream CPU. AMD's A12 APU delivers exceptional computing. As long as you're willing to sacrifice screen resolution and storage at lower price points, you'll be rewarded with an affordable system that's highly upgradeable as your needs evolve.

Very good disappointment. AMD Ryzen, mostly known for offering CPUs for consumer products, now want to compete with Intel in the business market. The EliteBook 745 G5, based on the very good EliteBook 840 G5, seems to fit the bill - at least on paper. You can read in this detailed review if it is convincing in reality as well!

Archive.org versionThe EliteBook 745 G5 is a fairly mixed bag. On one hand, we like its overall looks, feature set, relatively light body and powerful hardware combination that’ll make short work of most office-related tasks.

Archive.org versionThe HP EliteBook 745 G5 is sleek and elegant. However, it has a couple of unsatisfying aspects to it. I don’t think I’d trade in a short battery life span in favor of a light body, premium-looking design, and excellent audio output. They pointing stick in between the keyboard is a downer as well, but it’s not much of a significant issue, unlike the battery life.

Archive.org versionThe HP EliteBook 745 G5 has some impressive features, including a solid build and a good array of ports. The keyboard is comfortable to use, although the cut-out for the pointing stick is oversized and makes typing with the G, H and B keys awkward. Unfortunately the screen is a big let-down, lacking in both brightness and in colour vibrancy. Also, based on my real-world testing, the battery is unlikely to support a full day's work.

Archive.org versionThe EliteBook 745 G5 is a tale of two laptops: one, a beautifully-made professional notebook with lots of tools for keeping your data safe, the other a disappointing misstep with a budget-tier screen. The strengths just about outweigh the weaknesses overall, but there are better-rounded alternatives.

The EliteBook 735 G5 is the smallest model of HP's AMD-exclusive business notebooks. Although it performed well in our tests, the capabilities of the Ryzen APU were not exhausted. In this review, we show why the EliteBook 735 G5 is a great business laptop regardless.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

74.15%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
