HP Chromebook x360 12b review: It's affordable and good
Source: Good Gear Guide English Archive.org version
The HP Chromebook x360 12b is a good fit for people who want something affordable, but also noticeably nicer than what kids might use in school. It’s small, light, and versatile, and even comfortable to work on for long periods. I also know I’m going to miss the display’s 3:2 aspect ratio when I go back to a wider-screen laptop.

Lisa Gade reviews the 12” HP Chromebook x360, also available in a 14” size. This Chromebook has a classy looking chassis, 360 degree convertible design and a 3:2 aspect ratio touch screen with pen support all for $359. It has a dual core Celeron N4000 processor, IPS HD+ display, USB-C and a microSD card slot. Since it’s a Chromebook, it can also run Android apps and the Google Play Store is pre-installed. If you’re looking for a well-made budget laptop for home schooling, streaming, Google Docs and web, it’s worth a look.

It’s evident the Chromebook x360 12b is the middle child in HP’s newest Chromebook family, and that gives rise to some inevitable confusion in its identity and placement. The costlier Chromebook x360 comes with better performance (thanks to a Core i3/i5 chip), a clearer display (with Full HD resolution), and a much nicer touchpad (with smoother tracking and keyboard backlighting). It’s what you should get for full-blown Chromebook computing. What this 12-incher borrows from it, then, are the stylish finish, backlit keyboard, and ‘convertible’ display. In other words, the little Chromebook x360 12b inherits the looks and flexibility.

HP Chromebook x360 12B review: Absolute delight for basic computing
Source: India Today English Archive.org version
I have been blessed with a job where I get to play with some of the most exciting and powerful laptops, and speak about them in depth to you. The experience with the HP Chromebook x360 12b has been as joyous any of the exciting RGB toting gaming laptops I have used - only in a slightly different way. The Chromebook x360 12b is an amazing computer for work and entertainment on the go. Chrome OS is well optimised and that means you get a fluid user experience in a laptop that's cheap. The OS is restricted to a few functions but if ticks all those boxes that you seek to be completed, then it's a joy to use.

Does it make sense to invest in a Chromebook that is priced in the vicinity of Rs 30,000? HP tries to make a case for its new Chromebook X360. But can it fight off its Windows-laden brethren at similar price points?

HP Chromebook X360 12b-ca0002no

I find Chromebooks in general rather interesting. My first and so far last Chromebook was a Google Pixel that I got at one of the I/O events back in the day. I have to admit, back then, I could not figure out what I could do with it. I tried to install Linux on its limited hardware, tried using it as a multimedia device, but overall it felt like it was an overpriced device for those purposes, and I ended up selling it.

Having said that, that was a long time ago. Now, I look around and see that almost everything nowadays is either on the cloud or has web applications; so Chromebooks are making more sense. Do they have downsides? Of course. With the HP Chromebook X360 12b, they are also easy to find. For instance, if your browser is Chrome, RAM is an issue, and this model only has 4 GB of it. Since it is a ChromeOS device, hopefully this will not become a huge deal, but expect to have some limitations when running multiple Android apps as well as browser tabs all together.

Now, there is a Pentium processor, which is not known for its performance. Maybe for day-to-day tasks it is fine, but for anything that is going to need power (such as calculations, high graphical UIs, etc.), it will reach its limitations pretty easily.

On the other hand, I have to say, with such hardware, ChromeOS devices and any Unix device will perform better than Windows devices, because they are optimized for their specific environment. This is the case with Chromebooks, too. You need to know what to expect. If you are a project manager who happens to attend meetings and just takes notes and/or use a special app (like Jira, Trello) to keep an eye on things, it can work. Another scenario is that you are a student and need a helper for research and document work. Since it is convertible, it helps in terms of ergonomics as well.

Then again, let’s assume you have demanding needs. Well, let’s not dive into that, because it would not make too much sense. You can regard Chromebooks as Android tablets on Steroids, which basically they are. This is not a bad thing. It is all about setting your expectations right. It is a bit heavier, of course, and bigger than a tablet. At the end of the day, you will end up using a more versatile device.

Would I suggest the HP Chromebook X360 12b-ca0002no? As long as you are aware of your expectations, yes. I mean, it is not that expensive, so it will not cause a big hole in your pocket at the end of the day. Therefore, if you need a convertible device for a specific purpose, then you do not have to think much.

12.00:

This range of display format is largely the upper limit for tablets and the lower limit for subnotebooks.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small in size and therefore easily portable. The tiny display has the added advantage of requiring little power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is exhausting for the eyes. High resolutions, which one is used to from a standard laptop, are almost not usable.

The same applies to tablets in this size range.

74.29%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
