According to a recent statement released by Google, the company is hard at work on two smart glasses which are set to launch next year. Both of them will feature a metric ton of AI capabilities - a surprise to absolutely no one.
The company won't be making the smart glasses alone, however. The glasses will be the product of a joint collaboration between Samsung, Gentle Monster, Warby Parker, and of course, Google. As of right now, two sets of smart glasses are on the cards - one screen-free, and the other with an in-lens display allowing for augmented reality (AR) capabilities.
The first pair of smart glasses will utilize an array of microphones to pick up voice commands and cameras for visual knowledge, which will then be processed and fed back to the user with the help of speakers. The second pair, as mentioned earlier, will pack an in-lens display, allowing the user to observe navigation details, live translations, and more. Needless to say, the smart glasses will utilize the Android XR operating system, and all processing will happen on the user's smartphone.
Google smart glasses: First impressions paint a positive picture
Certain journalists from Bloomberg and CNN were able to demo the aforementioned smart glasses from Google, with Bloomberg getting their hands, or rather faces, on two AR smart glasses - monocular and binocular. As per their first impressions, the binocular variant offered a more expansive virtual display, although both the variants did display plenty of useful information from Google apps such as Maps and Meet.
Of course, how well a tech demo will translate into real-world life improvements can only be established once the glasses reach more hands. Judging by the first impressions from Bloomberg, the future for Google's AI smart glasses sure does seem promising, and perhaps more importantly, poised to face competition from Meta and possibly even Apple.
