Google confirmation: Modular Smartphone Project Ara is dead
The internal sources who reported to Reuters last week apparently were right: Google has indeed stopped work on Project Ara, a Google spokesperson confirmed to Venturebeat. Google did not comment on the reasons for the suspension, however the internal sources who reported to Reuters mentioned efforts to "streamline the company's hardware efforts". Google could still license the project to its partners in the future as the Reuters report suggested, however, as of now, it seems unlikely that Google will continue to work on a modular smartphone concept in the future.
